Its worth a try.
Don't NTL/Telewest/Virgin use optic fibre? Why aren't there more providers doing this?
NTL, Telewest and Virgin are now called Virgin media, no they dont use fibre for cable here.
Also many providers cant directly afford to lay fibre them selves since BT wont permit it. (Because they're exsisting "network" is under insane load).
Heh i am not in the UK but i signed it.
Erm, it'll not be cheap, with BT upgrading all those local exchanges. Bills will rise, and sadly, since BT customers generally won't necessarily be BB users, it'll be the ISP bills that rise
I vote for making Tiscali pay all costs, simply out of them being generally rubbish I have one of those knackered old exchanges mesel, but sacking off Tiscali and replacing them with Fast has utterly transformed my BB connection. Cunning choice of ISP ftw

i'm not from uk tho
Virgin Media is in the process of upgrading their network to fibre optic cables. My area was finished two days ago, since then my download speed has increased to 20mbit, or 2.4 MByte/second max download speed. The GRAW2 demo came home in just under 13 minutes. Nice!!!
Yeah the network, not the actual cable.
What was it before then?
I had it a while ago, and I always thought it was fibre optics.
I say hell yes! Although I don't live in the UK, I think people that are using BT should get Fibre optic cables for sure.
here in newyork we have verizon FIOS.
witch is verizon fiber optic
I'm waiting for Virgin to double my speed to 20Meg, however that also comes with bandwidth throttling at busy times, which I don't have on my 10meg connection...
It'll be interesting to see how much throttling actually occurs...
iv been running virgin 20mb for about 3 months now and the download speeds are excellent, the throttling only occurs between 4pm and midnight and your connection speed goes down to 5mb, but only if you download around 1.5gb between 4pm and midnight, you can download all you want after midnight right up till 4pm.
thus proving the awesomeness of the Utorrent scheduler...
But yeah BT do really REALLY need to sort it out, im sure where i live the local cable is at least 20-40 years old. Its crap, and we have to pay the same for services we dont use (like the VoIP phone thing) and the on demand video stuff, becasue our connection is far to slow and unstable. /rant...
