Fallout's gameworld (Including Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics) divides from our own around the 1950's or so wherein they have great success with nuclear powered appliances but technology sort-of remains in a cruder form all the way until 2077 wherein the resources of the world have all but disappeared which toggles a nuclear war between China and USA.
(It's not ever explained clearly who started armageddon but it is known that USA was landing troops in power armor in China and cutting straight through their forces shortly before the bombs fell.)

EDIT: Going back to Fallout 4 I dumped the game exe strings and sorted out all the config settings.

(Could be of some use for people doing ini tweaks as most of these are not part of the default ini file.)

Looks like Nvidia delete their Performance Guide.Problems with Bethesda? :D
    Here is in the webcache:
    https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/guides/fallout-4-graphics-performance-and-tweaking-guide
(Put your font browser on white color)

In short whats recommended in this guide:

    Texture Quality (Ultra)
    Anisotropic Filtering (16x)
    Anti-Aliasing (TAA)
    Shadow Distance (High)
    Shadow Quality (High)
    God Rays Quality (Low)
    Object Fade (50%)
    Distant Object Detail (High)
    Actor Fade (50%)
    Item Fade (50%)
    Grass Fade (50-75%)
    Wetness (On)
    Ambient Occlusion (On)
    Screen Space Reflections (On)
    Lens Flare (On)
    Depth of Field (Standard)
    Object Detail Fade (any)
    Lighting Quality (Medium)
    Rain Occlusion (On)
    Decal Quantity (High)

If you put all on Ultra then on High you cant see the difference,so why they bother to put Ultra on some settings?

No. The explosion happens in 2077 and after you get out of the shelter, it is some 200 years later (around 2277). The character was in a cryogenically suspended state for 200 years.

Anyone played it on a 144Hz monitor? Or is it locked at 60fps?

I think its capped to vsync or the refresh rate of the monitor (like Skyrim). If your monitor is 144hz, it should reach 144 fps (in easy areas if your hardware is capable).

It is simply not acceptable to lower graphics on a game of this level of fidelity from like a 2010 game.ok u want to give ****ty looking at least a mid range system should play it on high no problems but thats not the case here

I think something went wrong installing new drivers, my friend has a 660 he runs High settings fine, i keep getting fps drops even on High settings.

I'll run DDU and install older drivers first when Fallout 4 ran butter smooth and see how it runs.

i don't think a 660 could run it very well at high settings, and don't forget some people's definition of "fine" is 20fps.

Well it unlocked and played a little. At 1440p everything ultra and no AA the game runs a solid 60FPS, I usually never use AA. The game looks great, love the art style.

Game play wise the story introduction and what you ultimate task is is set out very well, just from the short time put in (less then an hour) I can see many hours sunk into this game.

980Ti should definitively give you more than 60fps. A single 970 makes the game run at a steady 60fps 1080p according to benchmarks.

    Ok, good to know.

My 970 runs it pretty well at 1080, but anything higher than that I do notice some drops. My Fury should be back soon, so cannot wait to play it with that. Other than that, My goodness....

I think some of you are missing the point of the deliberate graphic design. It mimics the 50's technicolor movies that were a bit soft and over saturated. Also Google "1950's advertisng" and you will see what look 4 was striving to accomplish. To me the color choice and design screams 1950's. I think they nailed it and love the look.

He gets between 40-50fps and sometimes 60, but still even i get about the same performance and that's with a 780.

Do you think this is nornal that a 340 $ gpu only lets u play at 1080 this game? When this gpu clearly lets u play at 1440p. Does anyone think that this is normal?

Wot? It's totally normal and that's the sweet spot for price for maxxed out 1080p gaming at 60-75 fps. Only 980 Ti and Fury X can truly give good 1440p gaming experience and no card is good enough for 4K yet.
