I've been searching around the net for similar situations, but no one seems to have come across the following: as soon as I installed F.E.A.R. 2 and tried to launch it, the screen blacks out and there's a loud "ding" (Windows alert) in the background. I minimise the window, only to find the following message:

    Unknown Error
The game client has failed to initialize.

There have been others that have had this problem with F.E.A.R. 1 and it's expansions, but after following their solutions (e.g. enabling only one mouse/keyboard profile in the Control Panel, re-installing with a clean registry, etc.) the problem is still there. Right now I have a very expensive frisby D:

Gurus, have any of you come across this problem (or better yet the solution)?

    EDIT:

I've tried adding an exception in Windows Firewall for F.E.A.R. 2, but the same problem occurs.

Nobody's got any ideas? I've tried all of the fixes that have been posted up in other forums (including the three part fix series), but still no hope...

    Hey there.You can try this.
Back up your files of course.
Goto this folder and delete the files inside.
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime

Search on torrents like mininova for the game, and you see on comments the solution, have an loader.exe, this enable you to play the game.
If you have downloaded the STEAM version, see on comments the tutorial to play the game.
This game is too hard to work, have much bugs, im prefer fear combat for online playing...

    Bye

Don't I need those files? Aren't they for the installer executables?

My game is the retail DVD version.

Bloody hell! I don't know how in the world you figured that one out, gerardfraser, but it worked! Instead of deleting the files, I renamed the folder (added an ";" in front).

I can get into the menu screen now. Lemme see if I can play it...

Install the DX9 runtime files located in the games program files directory. Should fix the problem for you, I have the retail dvd too and had the same problem
