This is one giant explosion. Supposedly there was ammonium nitrate that caught fire but I think it's still speculation.
The country was already expecting a financial collapse, this right here probably sealed the deal.

You know it's bad when Israel who is at war with Lebanon is offering humanitarian aid as well.

I saw it on the news, it looks mental!
But wtf are they doing with a munitions stockade in the capital with lots of civilians nearby?

That's massive explosion, probably couple thousand tons of TNT equivalent.

If some highly explosive material comes from the ship, it has to be stored somewhere. I quess that the stuff in that warehouse was waiting to be transported elsewhere.

50 dead and 2700 wounded is sadly going to go up a lot.

This is terrible. I hope something good comes out of all this. Strange that it also comes on the heels of the 75th anniversary of the use of atom bombs on Japan. I AM NOT SAYING THEY ARE IN ANY WAY RELATED, you crazy conspiracy nuts. Maybe poignant would be a better word.

BBC News at 6pm and again just now stated it was Ammonium Nitrate, used to make explosives, stored there since 2014.
In this episode the reporter asked the exact same question I did.
It is rank stupidity to keep incredibly dangerous materials stored in such a location.

At least 70 dead, 3700 wounded, it blew windows out several miles away.
    (edit: 6 miles away!)

In remarks published on the Presidency Twitter account, Lebanese President Michel Aoun has said that it is "unacceptable" that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate were stored in a warehouse for six years without safety measures and vowed that those responsible would face the "harshest punishments".

Up to 73 dead and 3700 wounded now. The blast was even seen and felt all the way to Cyprus, 217 kilometers away.

It looks like it was highly dangerous if they even tried to remove it!
BBC Newsnight just reported, in 2013 it was offloaded from a ship that was in trouble because it was too dangerous having a floating bomb in the harbour.
But then they forgot about it.
Being stored that long makes it much more unstable, it should never have remained anywhere that long, let alone close to a capital city centre.

Such a powerful and violent explosion to see.

Looks like Pepcon 1988 in terms of power.

Welding next to ammonium nitrate is not good.

In the video I saw, there was already a lot of smoke pouring from the building before it exploded, so if that lends credence to the official account, I'll accept it until someone can show otherwise. Let's not add to any crazy theories when we don't have any facts.

That silo probably saved a lot of lives, by the way.

  17. Yes agreed. No day, is a "day" for an explosion. Anything can occur on any given day. My statement regarding any "Hariri" connection.

The video I saw was stunning. The shock wave tearing through entire blocks in what amounted to milliseconds was unbelievable.
Looked like some kind of damn monster movie.
    Awful.

So sad, the last thing the Lebanese people need in their already tough times and strained economy. The last ammonium nitrate blast close to this (2200kg) was the Oklahoma City bombing back in 95.
