yay, more lag-free gaming laptops in restaurants...oops i mean more worked-to-the-bone 20-somethings outdoors at tech campus's (campussities? campindustries?)
Up to 5 miles (8 Km). I live less than 3 Km away from a friend, would be interesting to test if he could share his internet with me! ahahah But really, at those distances doesn't the curvature of the earth and obstacles make it impossible?
I get my internet from a small local company that runs fiber to a pole and then shoots wireless around the neighborhood. I get 500/500 unlimited 70$ taxes/equipment included and I never have to deal with comcast again. They respond in minutes to emails 24/7. Corporations are such crap.
I'm not sure if it's corporation's fault in this case. It's probably the fact that most of the States has no natural market competition between companies because there is barely no overlap between them, so they are basically localized monopolies. Countries with internet infrastructures from 4 or more companies competing for the same clients usually have much better price/performance, and treat clients with more respect.
Using an Earth Curvature calculator, it looks like you could place it at 1.26 meters high or higher, and if nothing is in between the two spots, cover the 8 km distance. So if placed on a roof with nothing blocking the line of sight you should be able to traverse the 3 km distance between your houses quite easily. https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/earth-curvature?c=EUR&v=d:3!km,h:3!m
indeed, but it's even worse than that. because of the US political system the local gov'ts are empowered to make their own choices which leaves them underinformed and poorly suited to winnow through the very limited number of ISPs to choose. then add lobbying from deep pocked multi-billion dollar corporations to small-time localities and you have a recipe for what the US has now and why S. Korea is so much better
As far you do not try to set it on your yards table and his yard table no. I am pretty sure even a house with 1 floor setting it in the roof and your roof would be more than enough! Now if earth was the size of mars or moon you would need at least 2floors height or 3!
When google started Google fiber they started fighting tooth and nail to stop it or delay it ! To my understanding USA telecoms split the areas and they actively do enter the others areas .... So kind of like drug selling corners and having control on your turf. Just using internet as their drug and instead of drive by shootings ,they buy each other and sue each other.
Unless you're in Kansas, you're going to have the problem of hills, plants, and buildings obscuring the signal before the curvature of the earth. I think these things, as the picture suggests, are mounted high up where they can operate at line-of-sight.
South Korea-38,691 mi² Continental U.S.A.-3,119,884.69 mi² Yeah that might have something to do with it.
