Yeah a strong story would really benefit Elder Scrolls. But it's hard to mesh a well written main story with lots of choice and freedom. You can't have a Mass Effect story with Elder Scrolls gameplay.

Playing Mass effect was like watching paint dry.

But Mass Effect had plenty of choices and freedom, somewhat.

But yeah, I just mean Elder Scrolls isn't for me, as I like stories and good characters, which it lacks due to it's very nature.

You can have a FO New Vegas story (most close thing to Bioware characters in open world environment) with TES gameplay. Is just that Beth (maybe only Todd, lol) like epic one sided stories. The single hero against the evil threat. Besides, they often settle everything so there would be against common sense to ally with the bad ones (Dagoth-Ur in TES3 would have fckd the world, Dagon in TES4 too, and Alduin wants to bring a proper fck to the world in TES5 dragon-god style). Fck the world with you in it or save it. If you're bad, you'd want to keep the world to keep beign bad i think, unless you're a suicidal maniac. Anyway, they absolutely could make a more open story (eg, for one time you wont save Nirn, even if you only know one continent of it, instead you're going to take sides in a revolution, an invasion, a war between several nobles, etc).

Did you play Morrowind? Ppl say that Morrowind had better dungeon desing. Fact is, there was only one designer for the around 200 dungenos that Oblivion had.

They're dealing with that aspect for Skyrim after a LOT of critic (8ppl working on dungeon design). And every thing that they said bout radiant story and quests seems to point that they want you to visit other dungeons instead of placing them like seeds on soil and expect you to stumble upon them sometime.

Anyway, i agree totaly with you on story though. They lack deep character development, or deep story althogheter. I wished that they'd put some of that work on Obsidian's hand but they didnt (completely on the other side, Todd said that wont have too much character deph on companions, instead he prefers quantity of companions).

But their freedom is awesome. You can act where you want, when you want, but no how you want. Instead of act how you want to act but when you're told to act.

TES tells you, do this sometime, somewhere. DA tells you do as you please now and here.

eg, i do like have the opportunity to side with the legion or house in FONV, but FONV executed in cold blood the need for exploration that i had in FO3.

Anyway, they're going to settle Skyrim between a civil war between pro empire and anti empire factions. So, i suppose that there is going to be a single ended main quest (after all, its against all nirn inhabitants interests to undone creation if they ally with Alduin lol) but with a faction choise inside, like Gothic approach (in the main quest it doesnt matter if Orcs stay or if Humans regain their lands).

Im also more for Mass Effect than for TES, just because i really prefer that sci fi style over that medieval stuff, but thats just my opinion, dont want to start a ****storm.
Anyways, i also liked Morrowind and Oblivion a lot, so i'll give Skyrim a shot, also because i wanna see that engine in action... guess they'll use it for the next Fallout, too :D

i somehow play sandbox game like this much more than the semi linear rpgs, sandbox games tend to have weaker story indeed due to their free roaming nature, but imo thats where imagination and creativity comes in. Helped me spend several hundreds of hours in oblivion, morrowind, fo3 and nv and other similar sandbox style games.

I never made it past 30 mins of gameplay, but may try again at some point, so many people seemed to have enjoyed themselves alot with this game.

Oblivion vanilla was a little tedious, oscuro's mod opened up the game for me, and im sure there will be plenty of those willing to try again.

Graphics wise this game looks great, looking forward to playing it.

Mass Effect was the only RPG i thought had a half decent story, and while i enjoyed some of the gameplay aspects of Oblivion and even Dragon Age and Witcher, the story was too rediculous for me to take serious, so i ended up dreading part of both of them.

I'm looking forward to this just for running about the world doing random stuff, as i fear plot wise this will be no better, but im sure i will have some fun with it, especially if it looks nice.

    This really blew my mind...

The Technology Behind The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Some side quests and lots of NPC/creature behavior are not scripted anymore. Instead they interact with the environment, the player character, the history with him/her, etc. Check that out. ;)

Indeed. Lots of the stuff there was planned for oblivion. It delivered but not at the full potential I was waiting for. Hopefully they will acheive what they promise this time. Those aspect of Oblivion really didn't delivered:

    -Radiant AI,
    -Radiant Story
-Fighting: I always found myself getting beat up after 5-6 monsters. Click «t», wait for 4 hours and go at it again. Didn't feel realistic at all. Same about fighting. If you get a huge hammer on your head, you should be at least a bit stun. So maybe drop of your guard for x seconds. Wouldn't happen which mean you would see me maching the attack button until the guys drop on the group.
-Story !!! Omg hated those oblivion gates! Never manage to finish up the game because of that. Too boring ! Hopefully there will be no dragon portal to go kill a dragon at the top of the tower !!!

    My 2 cents ! :p

PS: Morrowind was the best of the series. Oblivion was pretty much the same game with better engine. Hopefully Skyrim will revolutionize some aspect of RPG games !

Ok, and? I didn't say anything about the gameplay experience. I said story. Sure you can be of the opinion that the story was boring, however I found it quite interesting and well built, even though the gameplay itself was pretty dull. The best way to play ME1, in my opinion, is to set the difficulty level to Casual, not care about collecting items or how you level up etc., instead just concentrate on the dialogue, story and characters. Play it like a movie.

ME1 was interesting story wise. ME2 didn't have much.

All you do during the game is collect troops and maybe do their personal sub-quests and go finish the game.

Don't get me wrong, the way you get there is actually.. extremely well done, but as far as script depth and originality goes, it falls just a wee bit short.

One more thing..How long before we rename this the "ME2; great or not so great?" thread ? :infinity:

ME2 is the middle, of course it's not supposed to have much.

I know that Radiant AI was never properly finished. It looks like they are back on track now and went a few steps further than the initial idea.
