Testing various dx11 games it seems this control in nvidia control panel doesn't do anything. Compared to using the right variable in config with the dx11 games.

just use 1 for first person shooters (r6, cs go etc..) to minimize input lag. auto (3) as global

It depends on if you are playing a CPU-limited game or not.
Generally, it is recommended to set it to 1 globally and test other values (per-application) if you experience high CPU usage and low GPU usage in an application.

The setting controls how many frames the GPU can prepare before it sends them out to the display.

This gives the CPU time to pass its information onto the GPU in the event of the CPU bottlenecking the GPU.

A lower setting may reduce input delay as the GPU is not inherently delaying the frame transport to the display and may reduce stuttering if the CPU is waiting on the GPU.

A higher setting may allow smoother/higher framerates due to the CPU given more time to pass its frames onto the GPU to render, but only if the CPU is the bottleneck.
