if you can manage to hold on for maybe 1 more month? (there's no hurry really i suppose) then the additional 50£ is well worth it.
regardless of whichever card you'll get i think you will be happy with the performance, i'm not saying nvidia is better than ati cause that's fanboyism, i'm just saying the GF8 cards newer tech and that so called Gigathread thing really comes into play, i just reinstalled GRAW 1 for a test and i couldn't believe how smooth it was compared to the X1900XTX which is a real fast card in its own right.

    GigaThread™ Technology
Massively multi-threaded architecture supports thousands of independent, simultaneous threads, providing extreme processing efficiency in advanced, next generation shader programs.

actually it is the first time some new architecture shows benefits straight away unlike previous card generation.

good luck with your purchase Solinari. :)

You are talking out of Uranus again. When will you learn to do your homework before spitting things like that.

It's a frigging API. You can't make an API that will only work for a specific OS.
It's like saying you can make a programming language that will only work on a specific CPU! :p

If you want to learn something for a change, read my posts in this thread since I'm too lazy to debate the same thing again, especially with you behaving like an ignorant fanboy.
DX10 for Linux and OS/X may be closer to being released than you may think. Newest version of Parallels support DX9 hardware acceleration using an OpenGL based wrapper running inside OS/X. It's only takes a little step further into DX10.
Jesus, you are even giving fanboys a bad name. :D
How can you possibly be using a pirated XP if you are such a big fan of Microsoft! :p

Alec: depending on how one OS operates compared to another...... yes you can. Vista and DX10 were basically created around each other. to get DX10 to work on XP.... at least remotely efficiently...... they'd have to completely recode a large chunk of how XP operates.

and having something run on a specific CPU..... wouldn't be all that hard really. i mean.... if you're going by having it run on AMD or Intel.... all it would have to do is check the chipset.

that is like comparing oranges to apples. This thread is not about which OS(although has turned out to be one) is better(if u do that, VISTA WILL WIN(FEATURES)). Do u think shovin something in to make $$$ is good business? We probably know this but clearly microsoft IS evil co-op:cops:

True, and i didnt upgrade because of DX10 i did it because XP was boring. . . the same old same old i just wanted something new.

And i needed a fresh reinstall anyway due to my new hardware so i just put it on.
My purchase has nothing to do with wanting DX10. . Even if it was ported on to XP and M$ would find a way of banning it or locking you so you didnt get updateds and so on.
I wouldnt go back in about 3 months time Vista will be outperforming XP in most if not every way.

I don't think that it supports as much memory or hard drive space as XP. Also it's significantly more unsafe.

i dont know why everyone bashes vista either? i mean when i first installed it.. took alil getting used too.. but now drivers have matured alot. services tweaked ect. like i said many other times ppl want to use hardware FOREVER it kills them to upgrade (SRY FOR THE PPL WHO CANT) the time moves on ppl and so do we. mine runs like a dream and have no problems with is what so ever. and for me DX 10 alone is nough reason to go to vista! the games look fantastic. its the same thing with any other technology out there. u buy a new tv lcd b/c its smaller and has better image quality. u buy a dvd burner b/c u can hold more data on a small cd instead of a tape drive or floppy. its the same here. yes its ur choice to weather or u wanna upgrade. but its the same concept. i mean its ridiculous that ppl hate it so much they stopped upgrading went to a console. and use pc to talk. its not all that bad ppl.. come on wut did u think was gonna happen after 5 yrs! as time progresses things get more complicated its just the way it is. i will never go back to XP ever. just booting up vista alone and being able to install drivers off my usb stick is nough to stay for me. not like xp which defaults ur usb stick drive to c:... plus i use my unattended XML file and skip user creation and log in as super hidden admin and things are dandy for me :) xp blah... just look back and remember those who are complaining about vista are the same ppl who bitched out XP when it first came out bout requirements now look at everyone not wanting to let go. give it time. and after sp1 i bet this operating system is gonna b more great. vista gets my vote.... stop listening to hear say and use it urself then open ur mouth about it.

*just my opinion. not flaming anyone*

    Everything is doable !!!

Long, long time ago: C64, Spectrum ZX80, 386SX 20MHZ?!(have to look through my garage to be sure) HERCULES GRAPHIC SYSTEM !!!!
    - Amd486 120MHz ; S3Vision868 1MB VGA; SB 16 + DSP: 8MB DRAM
    - Amd5x86 100Mhz@133MHz (486Class, coped with the ALU perf./coudn't cope with the FPU perf. of the iPentium couterpart); S3Vision968 1MB+1MB (Think so) VRAM VGA
    - iPentium 166MMX@250MHZ; S3Virge 2MB/ sold it, S3Virge 4MB/ sold it, Matrox Mystique 4MB/ sold it yet again, Matrox MIllenium II 12MB + Voodoo I 4MB/ sold them both, got Banshee (the first 2D/3D accel.)/ sucked got back my MMII and Voodoo I....; SB AWE 32!!!
    - iPentium II 333MHz@400MHz; MMII + Voodoo I 4MB/ sold them, got Nvidia Riva 128 + Voodoo II 12MB,..... Second Voodoo II 12MB IN SLI !!!!!, sold the whole lot ...
    - iP3 Cellery 500@750,600@900,..... iP3 850MHz,..... Tualatin 1.1GHZ@~1.5GHz... AMD Athlon Thunderbird/Palomino/Barton/x64 754/939/AM2/,.... P4 Williamate/Northwood/Dothan (Pentium M) Pescot/Prescot x2 ... and o'course o'clocked 'em till they bleeded...GeForceSDR/DDR/GF2MX/GF2PRO/GF2Ti(not the ultra)/GF3/GF3Ti500/GF4Ti4200,4400... GF6, GF7 (read high grade VGA), ...

And then, all of a sudden, I've chosen to stuck to a Barton 2500@2,2GHz, GF5900XT modded to 5950Ultra Leadtek 128MB VGA...

It's not that I have to, but because I don't give a s**t 'bout it anymore. In my mind the entire PC gaming industry has bee milking us long enough by just copying the same old games, the very rules that've been the core of previous generations games and applying some : be it eye candy, physics, audio effects or a the hole complex of the before mentioned SHAIT.

In my hearth I'm a gamer and a truly HC one, but I'm not a being enthusiastic 'bout buying Titan Quest (instead of Diablo I & II), FEAR/PRAY (Duke Nukem 3D & Doom I&II, Hexen, HL...), the numerous f****d RTS clones against Warcraft I&II,& o'course Starcraft .... Planscape Torment /Fallout Series except Fallout Tactics, from a game developer (Black Isle R.I.P) that will in my mind will never be surpassed by the immersiveness and the originality of the fantasy plain....

Give us something new, don't say improved, give us something without: 'did you know about the 3+ new weapons and 15+ new mega tough enemies.... blah,blah,blah..... yadda yadda yadda'...., A new genre please, or new rule at least,......

I've been here forever, stayed down low, incognito and read, compared, thought 'bout: DX5, DX6, DX7, DX8, DX8.1 .... evolution, give us a REVOLUTION.

P.S. I'm still playing Final Fight & Street Fighter II with an emu. on my KB and I'm trying to revive the days I've finished it with just one coin inserted....

P.S.S Stopped upgrading when I felt that I payed my dues to the gaming industry.

    THIS IS MY STATEMENT.

You are mixing up the actual implementation (coding of a compiler or API support) with the design (semantics).
API and programming languages semantics are designed (not coded!) so they can be implemented on any OS in the design stage. You can't "check for a specific chipset" on this stage (since it's mostly done on paper ;))
API implementations and programming language compilers are coded (and yes, you can do whatever check you want when you are coding something), but that was not my point since API emulation does not involve emulating actual code, it involves implementing an API for a different OS environment.
That's just Microsoft baloney. I hope you don't believe blindly on whatever lies their marketing guys are spewing. It would be fairly easy for them to implement DX10 on XP. They just don't want it since that will eat into their Vista sales.
