I remember some of you guys on this thread talking about tessellation well I came across a news report in hexus.net well according to AMD and how tessellation works it speeds things up not down like this benchmark here is 2 quotes from the report.

    Quote
“Before tessellation, high-quality computer-generated characters required significant compute resources, but after tessellation came into play, developers could use low-quality models, run through the tessellation engine - thereby creating high-detail models with a lower compute overhead“.

    Quote

“"It achieves a much higher quality at three times the speed," Huddy marvelled, noting "none of us knew that would be the standard use of tessellation."

Here is the link to the story http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=20844

So there you go from the horses mouth.

why is everyone who enabled tess getting slower framerates?

For one thing: It is used to render more detail. And it doesn't come for free. But that has a price in other areas as well: Lighting and shadows for an example have to be applied to those details as well.

Then doesn't that defeat the purpose?

They said they created this tess thing to enable less powerful hardware to render objects with more detail.

What ur implying is that the benchmark there is slower cos of the other details like high, 4x AA, AF x16 etc.

Therefore to get higher framerates enable tess, set details to medium, 0 AA, AF maybe at trilinear.

With just tess enabled and the above settings it should look pretty good with higher frames what do u think?

I am the one who found the report and I have been on utube looking at early videos of AMD showing off tessellation and when enabled the frame rates do go higher same with compute shader.

Just load the demo up and put it in free cam and scroll your way to any stairs now when you there hit F3 to turn tessellation on and off you will see that when it is set to off the stairs are flat the same as in DX10 and DX9 now I know that when I have any games running in DX9 the stairs in games are not flat so the benchmark is basically using tessellation on the scene to the max as you can see on the roads I mean what game developer would use tessellation on the road like what you see in the benchmark in any game it looks well not right!.

Are you running vista and if so have you updated to direct x 11 platform update just in case you have not here is where you get it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=081c218f-c845-47d1-b124-71f80bf21638&displaylang=en

After running the script then go to windows update and there will be a platform update there download update then bobs your uncle.

If you have already done that then if may come in useful for someone else.

For what i am seeing quality wise and framerate wise i am not complaining. I think that the whole package looks good but thats what i paid all the money in CPU and vid cards for
Also for those worrying about Tess eng.

Try running a single card with AA 4 and AF 16. Very curious.

It's pointless benching with non dx11 cards. U need a true apples for apples comparison.

Also, enabling tesselation has a huge fps hit.

I'm not talking about that,. I;'m asking why is everyone who enabled this tess thing getting lower frames.

They designed this tess thing to enabled lower hardware to render nicer pictures. If u get lower frames then it defeats the purpose.

    PS

ANYONE KNOW WHY LADYBIRD AND MECHA WONT INSTALL ON WINDOWS 7,SAYS REQUIRES WINDOWS 7 TO INSTALL

What I said is to do about that! The benchmark is the very first benchmark around to use tessellation so that’s why its called a benchmark its meant to push your hardware to its limits regardless if its been programmed correctly or not like I said before AMD show cased tessellation and it always went higher frame rates so its shows as usual that its still down to the developer if they write crap code then no matter the hardware or the available features its still going to suck.

The only way to see for sure if tessellation turns out to do what is advertised is to wait for a game like DIRT 2 that uses tessellation for cloth water etc if the frame rates on DIRT 2 are low because of tessellation then its set in stone that tessellation is power hungry and AMD are spinning a lie but on a personal note I reckon the benchmark is just over power hungry and they may of not got the hang of DX 11 so there is nothing to worry about:p.

yep tbh i tried running the benchmark and failed with getting it 2 work in dx11 but ran it in dx10 and wasnt 2 impressed. maybe it's my current drivers but I dont rate this unigame benchmark at all....sound was choppy in places and the whole benchmark itself certainly wasnt as smooth as 3dmarkvantage for example.

i'm waiting for first dx11 game to come out then making a judgement. proof is in the pudding as it were.

Ummm...I've been screaming from the heavens for months that Tesselation would probably have a significant loss in FPS. I don't care how much dedicated hardware you put in; Tesselation takes a LOT of work to accomplish (use Wire Frame to see what I mean :D). And frankly, the 5000 series isn't that huge a jump over previous HW to begin with, so I'm not really shocked.

You can get away with it for water effects and the like, but we don't have the hardware to even consider doing tesselation gameplay wide yet.
