I recently had to pay a computer technician to fix my PC. It had a nasty virus that prevented it booting into Windows. I also had a problem with Windows not recognising USB devices. Anyway, the techician fixed it all and reinstalled Windows 7. The DVD drive was working perfectly before but as soon I put a CD in after the techie left, it spat the tray back out and it won't stay in. I've checked the cables, uninstalled the DVD drive and let Windows reinstall it, and updated the firmware. No change. I'm beginning to think I'm cursed when it comes to PCs and I really don't want to shell out more money to get the techie to fix it. Any suggestions?
If it opens everytime you close it (e.g. it does not close in the first place) it is likely that there is something mechanically stoping the drive from closing. Is it the same effect like when you put a finger in there and simply don't allow the drive to close?
I can put pressure on the tray and it will stay in but even if a CD/DVD is in there it won't read it. And when I press eject it makes a whirring noise for 5 seconds and comes out. Sometimes it take a few attempts to get it back out again. It does seem to be a mechanical fault but it only started happening the same day the techie fixed my PC, and it was obviously working fine when he left. I did change a few settings in Win 7 but nothing that should have caused such a problem. The timing is very strange.
Just try without sata/ide cable connected as WhiteLightning suggested. If it is still doing the same thing then it means it is a drive problem (nothing liked to software or OS) This can happen when the firmware gets wrong information on tray placement. What could solve that problem is to use a paperclip in the front hole and do a complete open/close movement manually.
Neither suggestion made a difference. I guess buying a new one won't cost much more than getting it fixed.
And while doing the open/close manually, did you noticed any special point where you had to force more? Anyway it is true that a new DVD R_W drive is clearly not that expensive.
I had to use the right edge of the tray to pull it out. The left edge of the tray was still plum against the drive.
Some have a switch inside to change the default to out. We used to do it at school to confuse the teachers. You need to try look in the gap inside the tray hole.
DOes this with my dads floppy LOL, its a virus or malware or spyware or something that does that.
Yeah I have the opposite problem with mine. It keeps shutting all the time. Most likely it's mechanical as mentioned above.
