This implies you need to use the video output to get this to work, ergo, over HDMI.

 

Its a pass through codec over HDMI. ie it is passed as encoded packets over the HDMI audio connections, along with video over the video connections.
What is connected on the other end must support DTS:X decoding or there is no point using it, unless you like silence.
DTS:X is an object based method of encoding spherical surround audio data for reproduction on systems with surround and height channels.
It competes directly with Dolby Atmos.

The ultra part is just the name of the app the PC uses to encode DTS:X in surround.
This suggests that this encoding app doesnt support encoding of height channels because PCs dont have them. It can only encode what you actually are able to use.
(The codec has no part of its name that is called Ultra)

It may be able to do compressed 5.1 over SPDIF but you'll have to test that.

DTS-X is built for HDMI and cannot work through very narrow bandwidth like SPDIF

 

Ordinarily it is a pass through codec from a pre-encoded source.
There is now a PC encoder.

Read up on DTS:X specifically, audio is converted to object oriented positioning in 3D space.
This is reconstructed at the receiver to suit your exact speaker positions.

Your subject is DTS:X, I'm not sure why you are asking.
The encoder will turn whatever you use into DTS:X, I made effort to say that.

I havent dug deep enough but it appears you have.

 

Facing the exact same issue. Atmos and PCM work on 5.1 via HDMI, without any issues. But the moment I enable DTS:X Ultra, it falls to stereo, and if I manually set speakers to 5.1, DTS:X Ultra gets disabled. Seems like an issue with the app, or its implementation.

Dolby Atmos implementation has a special Windows speaker configuration for Dolby Atmos, where you can go in and set it to 5.1. DTS:X Ultra has no such entry in the speaker configuration menu. DTS:X Ultra option only exists in the spatial audio modes.

 

Make sure your digital output is set up to stream DTS audio, by enabling the output modes.
