Whats there to say GOOD they must learn the hard way, then again they have not learned anything from the last time it happened.

Cause it's not about learning, it's about getting away with it.

It seems that, generally, years of massive margins due to price fixing are well worth the fine (that you might not even end up getting)

This kind of behaviour will allays continue because the punishment never gets anywhere close to the profit made so expect to see it again.
Imprison the perps and take away their personal wealth if you want to stop this from happening again.
Pushing out a fine on the company itself wont do a thing.

The issue with such fines is that the ones "suffering", the customers, see not a single $/€/Yuan from that.

Governments earn more by sales taxes, and then fine the companies for less money than they actually squeezed out of it by their sales to customers. So a portion of the increased revenue lands with the companies, the other portion goes to governments.

    Nothing for the customer.

Yet another thing, that we the customers are gonna pay for. However the fine will probably be nothing near to the profits gained from the hiked prices. Crime pays, if you can afford it.

What's a "small" fine if the profit is bigger? Plus, if the price stays the same we still have a problem.
Just fine them ALL the excess profit of give them the option to build more supper fabs with the money.

For the most part I agree, but if nothing stops the companies from getting repeatedly sued, they will drop their prices. Once a precedent has been set, that makes for future lawsuit opportunities much easier. It all comes down to how they approach this.

So if just China paid US$88.92 billion
The companies would have made 50% profit at least on that.
being fined up to $8 Billion is nothing at all... when they are talking about $40 Billion in their pockets.
Personally, they should cough up all of it, that way they feel where it hurts.

George Carlin made a good example of how to stop certain things like drug money being accepted by banks.
Once you start punishing the top management of that business in a "running man" styled streaming event once a week (life sentences without any release whatsoever ),
    it will stop pretty quickly.
Make it a pay per view, sponsored by budweiser and nascar..

Such fine is better than nothing, but main problem is that 90% of market is own by 3 big companies and those companies are usually lead by band of sociopaths..

I think I read somewhere that a large proportion of CEO's would be psychopaths if you tested them! It's therefore not surprising that companies sometimes go down the route of the shady operations!

Yes, I've heard about this too. It's not really a surprise - in order to make a business successful, sometimes you have to throw others under the bus, and take the offensive against potential competition. Empathetic people have a hard time doing something that will hurt others, and also don't like to attack something unprovoked.

Yep, and that's why we need regs & punishments to keep a lid on these folks!

When companies do crap like this they know they will get fined, it's all a part of their profit calculations. They'd have to be fined an insane amount for it to just break even, which as far as I know has never happened.

Because they are only rated by how big money gain for company owner / shareholders is.. and there not really other metrics.. yes bad PR could cripple company, but in world even selling calculation machines to speed up Jews extermination didnt kill HW company (famous Hitlers Germany IBMs deal) , they are ok with lots of dirty things.

There were and are much worse money deals which are killing people- wars, blood diamonds, stupid war on drugs, import taxes nad other free market contrains, children sex market in some Asia countries, all exist because for someone are money on 1st place and dont have any empathy ... In some small village society you would just get rid off 1 guy which is toxic for community, but in big globalized world is not so clear and easy..
