I had to reinstall XP twice in the 3 days that i've had it . I'm not too pleased...

The first reinstall came about after the loading screen to start up windows didn't appear, but windows loaded up in the background. Video drivers were Detonator XP 21.81

The second reinstall happened because it started to constantly get errors about DevLdr32 not working properly and aways wanted to send off a report to Micro$oft.

Next time it happens i'm going back to Win ME

Yes, it seems to be a fairly common consensous that it sucks, I had nothing but crashes, and between that I was putting up with MS bugging me constantly to use media player rather than winamp, or some dumbass cd burning program instead of adaptec. It was ok at first to surf and email, games didn't work well, T2 anyway.
It ****ed up again today - 3 crashes in 3 days, so Win ME was quickly reinstalled.
XP seriously needs debugging before i'm going to buy the final release version

hehe, thats the microsoft preinstalled chip cooling software. Crashed and makes you turn off the pc, cooling the chip down. Seemed like a good idea at the time, plus look at the electricity you save.

Windows XP sucked for me. My 4 channel sound wouldn't work, it was slow, and just generally crappy. The new interface is good, if you are a 5 year old kid. I hate XP. HATE. I was so psyched to get it installed and it crapped on my boot.ini file, and it wiped out my Win ME/XP dual boot. I say screw XP!

I've read in the Oct.2001 edition of Maximum PC that there is a "Compatability Mode" feature of XP to make it emulate a previous version of WIN. for whatever program you are having difficulty with. I think it's called BootVis.exe...I'm not sure, but that was in the title bar of the screenshot. Maybe there is a helpfile to direct you to this...I dunno.
15. Jeah this compatability function is really cool for many older dos games ! But without sound
Hope there will be a driver or work around 4 that from creative (but i think to believe this is unrealistic if we look at their support for their older cards).
-------
Thanks wild someone already told me that it might help to use Partition Magic ..
I don't know much about it not even where i could d/l a demo !- ?

This message was edited by CaptainStarMac on 09 Oct 2001 09:03 PM

For future reference, is the compatability mode program what I said it was? I probably won't go to xp until springtime.

Who said anything about using a demo?
You can get it from www.powerquest.com but it won't make any changes because it's only a demo........unless you uhh..accidentally *corrupt* the file to make it work better

Windowx XP Pro has been great for me so far, i've not had any problems with crashing in apps or games, I found drivers for all my hardware except a)SB-Live b)Canoscan. The SB Live drivers that came with Windows XP work briliantly on anything microsoft made, but they seem to push a lot of sounds from anything else (winamp, games etc) to the rear speakers. I fully expect the creative xp drivers to fix this problem. I've also got Office XP Pro and XP Plus! to compliment the setup. The speech recognition of Office XP is more fun than any game, believe me! Try saying some song lyrics to it and see what comes back to you.. it's hilarious!

The only problem so far is pretty small so i wouldnt really call it a problem, more like an annoyance.. it is that the start menu/taskbar/quickstart shows a sand timer and is unaccessable for up to 60 seconds after windows loads, possibly while background apps run before systray.. does this happen to anyone else? If so, do you know how to speed it up?

XP still does not fulfil that 75% confidence threshold for me yet to install myself...not to mention that it would be £160 to get an OEM upgrade version ($280?) I jumped on Win ME first time and got bitten by bugs. WOn't happen again

Syntax_error has the same attitude I think...

...although it is new and cool and crazy and has a nice desktop (hello winblinds) it (reportedly) doesn't have 4 speaker support on SB LIVE (COME ON MS, YOU INVENT SOLITAIRE BUT CAN'T GET 4 SPEAKER SUPPORT FOR YOUR TROUBLES? EAT MY COAT!) and a whole host of other featuresless features which won't be supported until some developers in Silicon Valley get off their boomska and work! (They think you can't see them in NFS4 Online, but they race there in Porsche Land all day long!)

As I said earlier, the bugs and problems cannot be fixed by the 10 year old kid or his daddy who got hims a new PC for his Xmas...so the vendor bears the brunt of the consumers niggles, burnouts and failures. Which is not so much of a problem for the BIG retailers who have full time tech teams available ( ) BUT the smaller good guy vendors who offer real advice and don't try to sell you a NEW IMAC to match those $30 speakers!!

The wee shops are having to deal with the returned XP machines and their margins dont really cover spending 6 hours trying to suss out the problem for a heavy-duty IRATE customer and fix it, not to mention his 30 other customers with the same problem. Microsoft seem to be trying to shaft their users, their buyers and eventually themselves as Linux may well start to shine?!?!?

XP should be heavily discounted in price until it's actually retail-ready!!!

Thanks for listening,
Phew!! Some heavy-duty complaints here!!
I have an 'average' system, home built as funds allow: An 800 Duron@872, Prophet 2 GTS Pro64, 512 PC133 SDRam, Chaintech 7AJA motherboard, Toshiba DVD-CDRW, 2xWestern Dig. 20/30gb hard drives.
I've been dual-booting Win ME/Win XP since XP RC-1 came out, and had no probs whatsoever, and now finally have the full retail version of Pro. and it's upgraded my RC-1 no probs. No conflicts, no driver errors, nothing. It runs really smooth, is fast in games - as fast as Win ME, and doesn't want to crash!! If I do something really silly and force it to, it drops to the desktop and lets me reboot...how civilized!!!
As far as I'm concerned, this is what ME was promised to be when it came out (but didn't quite make it, though I never had the crashesd that so many people moaned about. Am I just 'lucky' here??), and is the best thing out of Microsoft in my few years dealing with PC's!!
Like anything else, I guess it can't work for All of the people, All of the time, but it does for me, and I'm happy
