Does 1x24" + 2x20" = Eyefinity? ...... YES!

    Hello Guys

Its often asked, Can you mix different resolution monitors with Eyefinity?
    IE: 1x24" (1920x1080 native) and 2x20" (1600x900 native) monitors.

Its always been yes, but the large monitor always adops the lower resolution and in turn blurs the image at full screen. :(

Well, I have worked out how to run these 3 monitors with different resolutions in eyefinity without the loss of visual quality.

    This is how:
Note: Running Catalyst 11.1a Hotfix and CCC2

1: Ensure only the middle 24" monitor is active and displaying your desktop.
    2. Open CCC2 and navigate to My Digital Flat-Panels/HDTV Support
    3. Under Predefined and Custom HDTV Formats, select Add
    4. Using the arrows provided, create a new 1080p 1600x900 resolution.
    5. Select Accept.
    6. Select the new custome resolution and Apply Format.
Note 1: You may have to close CCC2 before you can apply the new resolution.
Note 2: Your 24" monitor will now be displaying 1600x900 in the center of the screen. (black boarder around the desktop).
    7. Navigate to Desktop Management/Creating and Arranging Desktops
    8. Duplicate your desktop on the 2 20" monitors
Hint: Use the drop down arrows on the little monitors and select duplicate
    9. Now simply run through the motions of creating your EYEFINITY display :)
Hint: Drop down arrow on big blue monitor, select Display Group/Create Group.

    Here is how it looks.
    http://cid-a7a4c0c44b603cce.photos.live.com/self.aspx/New album/DSCN1713.JPG

Now as you can see, the 2 20" monitors are in front of the 24".
This is to reduce the boarder between the screens.
Just take care you dont damage your 24" screen.

Now this is not the best solution for Eyefinity, simply deminstrating that it is possible without loss of image quality. (Blur)
I will only use this for Gaming, and revert back to Extended or Single desktop.
Simply create a Profile (Preset) from within CCC2 and jump between as required.

    Please, drop your feedback :)

    how did you setup "profiles"?

i want to have a seperate gaming eyefinity group for eyefinity and a regular extended desktop for windows use.

  4. just save your settings when you are in the desired mode :E

You can also game on windowed mode + resolution tweaks (dirt2, f1 2010..)

Using CCC2, simply setup your desktop arrangement, apply the changes and then navigate to PRESETS and select Create New Preset.

You can launch each Preset from the task bar by right clicking on the ATI logo.

    That simple.

Note 1: I have had some strange instances where it does not save the Presets correctly, or sometimes you have to select the Preset twice for the correct arrangement. But 11.1a Hotfix appears to have this issue sorted.

Note 2: Also while creating Presets, I leave all the modified option tabs expanded. In CCC standard, you have to select each option to backup, in CCC2 you dont have this option. So as a precaution I just leave them expanded.

ahh yeah i know that, would have been nice to just have a switch though :)

  7. isnt that a switch? i have two shortcuts on my start menu (they are CCC profile shortcuts)

    "Eyefinity" and "Normal"

when i click normal it goes extended, and when i click eyefinity it goes eyefinity

PD: I cant see that image, with your method you can do eyefinity at different resolutions, or you are simply making the 1920x1080 work at 1600x1050?

Eyefinity will adopt the lowest native resolution of the three monitors.
So the 1920x1080 monitor will display 1600x900 but with black boarders around the image. This way you maintain image quality. In a sense you just convert your 24" into a 20" with large boarders.

So I guess think of it this way, an image of 1600x900 is displayed in the center of your 24" monitor.

You end up with a total resolution of 4800x900 in this configuration. (Excluding Bessel alteration)

That is so damn cool, hahaha..

I got to say owning any weird unfunctional equipment always introduce genious behavior in people. Impressive.

Hay TWL.... Thanks for the compliment :)

It started to bug me that I could not run Eyefinity by conventional means, so I started to play around. And vola! Very happy now. I have the best of both worlds, Eyefinity and 1080p gaming without the additional expense! :)

That is cool and thanks for the info!

But I want to know if I can run a 2560x1600 Middle screen with 2x 1600x1200 in portrait modes on the side for 4960x1600 resolution?

From my understanding, you require 3 identical resolutions across all 3 monitors.
Equal Hight and equal Width. So I doubt rotating your side monitors would work.

You could still apply my workaround and end up with 4800x1200 Eyefinity setup.
    Slightly larger than mine.

ahh sorry mate, i think i got dragged off on something while posting and only replied to Black_ice_Spain when i got back. Cheers for the info, actually your info would have been mega for me 2 months ago when i was running a 22" and 2x19" screens, unfortunatly i went from 5850->6970 and my old screens wouldnt work( 6970 only supports 1 VGA->DVI connector ) so Christmas eve i had to go out and quickly find 2 decent screens cheap, now theyre higher res than my centre screen lol.

  16. you can do it i guess.

If not via eyefinity, do it via windowed gaming + custom resolution, or softth.
But try setting up both monitors as "rotated" in windows7, and then try eyefiniting.

I've played like 50% of the games i own with those methods without eyefinity.

Altho my 2nd monitor its kinda sucky on image quality and colors differ, so i only really use it for racing games where speed doesnt allow me to notice differences.

CCC has an option to rotate, you may be lucky

Thanks for this, got mine working now with the custom res idea,
2 1920x1080 and the midddle one 1920x1200 on custom res 1920x1080, works a treat just puts small borders on top and bottom of middle monitor, so it works this way too for anyone struggling. Thanks again, was pissed off when it wouldnt work without stretching the image.
