I agree....if you play at 1920x1080 or above.......anything less and I single GTX 260 is plenty from my experience

Two rigs, GTX 295 Quad SLI on a Rampage II Extreme/Core i7 975 Extreme and
GTX 280 Tri SLI on a EVGA 790i/QX965.

I was a little disappointed with the quad sli. Tri sli scales very well. I am gaming on high res monitors with everything maxed out always. I am also going to a 12 step program for over-spending. :)

driver problems with sli 8800 gt set up

I did have problems with a lot of drivers, after the release of GTX 2XX cards and drivers geared for them.
Drivers is what drew me to this site when i had a rivaTNT video card. I have bought many ATI and Nvidia GPU's I had D\L'ed Drivers as they came out for years.
I went SLI with 8800GT's in my opinion the best value Nvidia GPU since the AGP gs 6800 that you could unlock the pipes and pixelshaders from R\T.
Drivers werent an issue till the gtx 2XX series of cards came out.
I believe Nvidia forgot about all those people who had ventured out onto the thin ice of SLI and had cost effective solutions like 2 8800GT that were keeping up with expensive GTX 275 cards.
I think Nvidia added glitches to many drivers that expressly played merry hell with sli\8800gt set ups.
I sat pat with 182.08 driver for over a year because everything i tried after that driver was a DOG!
The latest driver i have tried was the 195.62 and it run's fine!
    Go figure.
I think Nvidia realised that a lot of Us R&D specialists (we the Gurus) were not going to upgrade GPU'S every6 months like they want us to.
I finnaly boughta next gen card by the way, its a gtx 260 ill SLI it of course. I like to think im cutting edge.
I know others have better set ups than mine. but thats their choice. I have made mine and im happy

I said this exact same thing in another thread and got bashed by like three people for it. It's nice to see that someone sees things my way though :)

I was going to wait till Fermi until I upgraded, but decided to buy another 9800GTX+ which should be here soon. :)

2 of these cards should suffice for now.

I have use SLI rig since GTX 7800 come out. If i remember correctly, i had 21" monitor at that time. Then GTX 8800 come out and i all so changed monitor to Dell 24" witch has normal 1920X1200 resolution. Now i use GTX 260 set and reason i have used SLI is that i do not want compromise resolution or image quality. Its true that some times with some certain games i had to do so, but its minor croup and minor adjustment.
When i have build rig i all most all ways had to do some compromise if components isn't available at time.

I know I answered this question already(in the affirmative). But today I got a really pleasant surprise. My New Rig came in 1st place @ Nvidia's SLi Zone/Club SLi. See attached pic.
