In terms of legacy games - XP and Vista era, am I not right in saying that Win 8 gives problems but 7 generally doesn't ?

The user interface issues is one reason but the gaming thing is the other with me.

I'm now about to go onto 7 only now ! This was due to a hiatus away from ( XP/Vista era ) gaming, which I want to end now, but I am spurred on to make an OS change due to the imminent ending of support for XP.

So would you agree with my Q in para 1 ?

I'm on 8.1, looking forward to the April update.

It certainly requires a bit more work to get it to taste, compared to 7, but the under-the-hood stuff really does help everything feel that bit snappier. Some performance gains under certain intensive titles, boot is infinitely faster, footprint slightly lower (and improving all the time)

Worth upgrading? Depends if you don't mind the cost and learning curve. I've been encouraging people to do it, by and large.

No, haven't used 7 in years. 8.1 is much, much better IMO.

Pretty much everyone I know and myself (save one person) are still on Win 7. For me, the minor benefits of Win 8.1 haven't seemed enough to make the switch!

Been using 8.x since RTM. No software issues whatsoever (had to use MS application compatibility toolkit on a couple old games tho eg gothic 1,2).

I also recently put it on my 2010 netbook\htpc and it literally uses half the memory that 7 did.

Yup. Unless Microsoft steps up their game, Windows will never recover. I open the windows store from time and time and the non-sense available is astonishing. "Latest news on IE" for a mere $1.49 on the front page? Seriously? It's like they mixed up XBLIG with the MS Store.

I am on Windows 8 original... I've gone up to 8.1 twice now and both times I've found something that stops me doing what I want to do, or a design change from 8 Original that I do not like.

Windows 8 Original fully updated + Classic Shell is pretty good.

The only real reason to upgrade is if you want the benefit of the optimizations along with DirectX 11.1 / 11.2

I've got 8.1 on my laptop, and 7 on my main machine. I keep meaning to switch them around, but I can't be bothered.

Dual booting 7/8.1 and using 8.1 more than before. This only after tweaking/configuring the hell out of it to be closer to 7. 8.1 out of the box is an unthinkable proposition for me.
