I really didn't think I'd be asking this... but should I go for a gtx 1080 now? My current monitor is a qnix, so it's dual link dvid which I won't get on any of the new cards. I'd have to get an active adapter if I went with a 20xx, or a new monitor. I'm not sure how good active adapters are. With the 20xx's costing so much, and my qnix is working just fine. I dont see a reason for getting a new monitor anyway. Does it actually make sense to buy a 2+ year old card at $430ish?

I went from 970 to 980ti to 1080 using my Qnix QX2710. The combination of the GTX 1080 with the 1440p resolution is just right. Great cards for the money. The only time I feel like I want to upgrade the 1080 is when I play race sims in VR, but I just lower some settings to hit 90fps more consistently.

Otherwise, I pretty much max everything. BTW, the 1080 is a massive upgrade over the 970.

If you want decent fps for reasonable money (and/or maintain 144hz) I would buy an energy efficient, cold and quiet GTX 1080 over anything the red team has to offer.

I've also been looking around for a replacement GPU for my RX 580 (8GB) and think I will go with either a new GTX 1080 or potentially buying my friends used GTX 1080 Ti.

If you want the best air cooled 1080 look no further than the Palit Gamerock 1080. Trust me. Not the best looking card but that cooler, pure brilliance.

Just curious, have any of you tried an active adapter? If I skipped two generations, and got whatever the 20xx successor is and used an active adapter, is there bad latency/etc? I don't game a whole lot, but I enjoy the pc master race, so maybe I can still justify the price of the card.

No sorry mate, never used one of those adapters. Plug directly into DVI.

Fair enough. Since I'm not in a rush, maybe I'll wait to see if prices dip more during/after the holiday season.

I recently took the plunge to a used Leadtek GTX 1080 for my HTPC rig, figured I might as well try some gaming on the rig which was hooked up to Panasonic 4K TV. The card cost me about 330USD and it was well worth it, I can actually play games at 4K at pretty high ingame setting, so yeah, get the GTX1080!

Do you game above 1080p? If not, I'd say grab a GTX 1080 and be done with the worries. If you game @ 2k or higher, wait for prices to drop on the 2080.

so last week I upgraded my gigabyte windforce 980ti to an evga 1080 superclocked 2,
and I have to say, I'm pleased with the upgrade, the 2000 series reviews really pissed me off, the price did not match the performance I was expecting, so I didnt' mind paying $500 for a the 1080 sc2, brand new.

As far as the old 980ti?
I was gonna sell it for like $250-300, but I have a family member building a new PC, so I'll just give him that as a gift.

I game at 1440p, and the 1080 is not a substantial upgrade, but what I love is the lower power consumption, almost silent GPU, with fan speeds near 50-60%, and temps are so considerably cooler as well, I haven't even OC'd it yet.

I game at 1440p, the problem is that the 20xx series cards don't have DVI-D ports anymore, so I'm either shelling out an additional $400 or so for a monitor or buying a DP->DVI-D adapter (around $40). So either way, it's more expensive to do a 20xx.

I'm honestly content with how my 970 handles things at near max settings, I'm just thinking of the future since I'd like to ride out this monitor for a few more years since it still works great. Seems pointless to replace something that works well still.

If you're not in a hurry, I'd say wait until 2080 vanilla prices come down, grab that and an adapter. Anything over a vanilla 2080 will be overkill if you're not gaming in 4k and don't plan to.

How about a nice dead thread resurrection?

I was looking again today, looks like 1080s are clinging to $450 pretty hard. What do you all think about 1070tis? They're hanging around $360 which seems pretty reasonable since they're only like 5% less performance than the 1080. Are any of you waiting for black friday/cyber monday? I kind of doubt there's going to be a killer sale on these things.

I don't feel comfortable buying second hand electronics.

Edit: plus they're pulling 500+ still. I'm not willing to spend that much.
