    Hello.
    I have pentium d 915 dual core 2.8ghz cpu with 3Gb (667 Mhz) ram and i bought a gainward geforce 9800gtx gpu.
I thought i could play the games in good fps but i am dissapointed. What it might be wrong ?
Is my gpu not fast enough?
Is my cpu which drops the frames?
Is my soundcard onboard? Does soundcard affect game performance?
I dond't know what to think. i try to use lower resolution even 1024x768 but i manage to gain a few fps (4-5) from 16080x1050 which i had. i think this is very strange.
If it is my cpu i am going to buy a new set (cpu motherboard ram).
What do you suggest me quad or dual core for gaming ? intel or amd ?
I am also thinking to buy a sli mobo so in some months when i have the money, to buy another 9800gtx in and put it in sli mode.
or should i shell my gpu and buy a better?
But in all reviews i read before i buy it i see it is similar to 8800gtx and even with 3870x2. thants why i bought it. before i had gainward 7600gt golden sample.
Does the other brands of 9800gtx like asus or bfg or xfx are better ?
If you want me to run a benchmark to post the results to see my performance tell which i and i will run them.
But in 3dmark06 and crysis the frame rate is very low.
I also overclock my card to 800 1225 2000 but not a big difference only 1-2 fps better.
    Please give me your advise.
    Thanks.

It the cpu, get a C2D or phenom (i suggest the C2D), and buy better ram, you will be happy.

Yes your CPU is bottlenecking your card, get a C2D instead or a Q6600 it will give you a major boost.

    i have an 8800gts P.O.V 640mb card and my CPU is an Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20GHz (2 CPUs)

    i have 2gb ddr2 800mhz 4-4-4-12 timings and my motherboard is decent

do you think my CPU is holding my G card back, thanks

To you dimkrom and misto, always fill in your specs when asking a question because it makes it one heck of a lot easier to troubleshoot. That should be Rule #1 when asking for hardware advice, especially on a forum like Guru3D. But welcome to the community. :)

Yep. I've been doing some digging but I don't see much information about your chip. I'd guess that it may be holding back your card, as does my CPU, but it all depends upon the application. Most games currently are completely GPU-dependent so if that's your main concern, you're probably OK. If your one of those who care more about benchmark scores, then maybe not.

U need at least a Core 2 Duo running at 3.0Ghz to eliminate bottleneck. Quad is recommended since Q6600 is cheap and easily overclocks to 3.0Ghz. Your RAM is good enough if they can run at DDR2 800. U might want to get Vista to take advantage of DX10 since your GTX is fast enough to handle DX10 games.

Previously I was running on Pent D at 4.0Ghz with ATI X1950 XT. After switching to Core 2 Duo, all my games get at least 20% FPS boost, some up to 50%. Clearly my Pent D even at 4.0Ghz bottlenecked my old X 1950 XT. Now I running on Quad with 8800 GTS. All games run smoothly. I notice newer games like those using UT3 engine do utilize Quad Core so you might want to get a quad for future proof.

    Misto

Your Pent Dual Core is based on Core 2 architecture but only with 1MB L2 cache. A lot of games takes up performance hit with less L2 cache with Core 2 CPUs compared AMD CPUs. Here's a good read.

    http://www.****************com/document.php?id=651&p=3

    Replace *** with legionhardware

If you don't want to change CPU, I suggest you overlock your CPU to the max to eliminate bottleneck. Maybe 3.0Ghz will be good. Your CPU should be easy to OC with 11x multiplier. If u want to change CPU, get a 45nm Core 2 or a Quad-Core.

in my mind it isnt realy the cpu at fault when he only gains 5 fps when dropping from 1680x1050 to 1024x768 also it isnt the ram since my ram is only at 216 mhz right now and its fine. what kind of software do you have installed to get the best out of this kind of stuff you realy need a minimal clean install. what games are you trying to play and what drivers are you using?

u really need to get a new CPU. the Pent D is way to slow for the card.

I agree that his cpu bottlenecks but like otaku says, it's not normal that he only gains 5 fps when he changes his resolution. Have you tried other drivers?

    well i update my profile.
I also overclock my cpu by increasing the fsb from 200mhz to 235mhz with multiplier x14 of my cpu at 3290Mhz (defauls is 2.8) since i have the thermaltake armor lcs case with liquid cooling system, but not a noticeable change in games.
here is results from crysis demo at defualt speeds of card and cpu

i use the latest drives of nvidia with 3d settings on nvidia control center to manage by application.
What should be the frame rate so i can see smooth image?
I use tft 22" wide monitor with 5ms responce time.
I also want to play in stereoscopic 3d in anaglypgh mode, but there the fps is even lower in new games.
In old games like half life 2 at maximum details at 1680x1050 in normal mode is aroung 60fps and in sterepscopic 3d it drops from 30 to 50 fps it depends on the screen, so the image isn't smooth.

by the way whith the crysis 3d benchmark utility which you have on the site i can't get the dx10 to work even when i select it the test runs on dx9 so i use the bat files from the demo.

    In this link
    http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=9&artpage=3373&articID=811
look at the benchmarks for crysis a way too far from mine with the same card but with different cpu. Is this that much the difference between the cpus ?

Well i am going to buy a new pc so what is best
    memory:
    ddr3 or ddr2
    800 or 1066 or 1333mhz
    cpu:
    quad or dual core
    amd or intel
    any good motherboard?
i want to build a fast pc.
    Please suggest me.

if you post in the general harware section and put down an amount to spend and what you need then out off all the guru's here you will end up with the best pc for the cash

Dimkrom - Just be aware that crysis stresses your system like no other game on the market. I dont think any single GPU can run it at max settings at decent FPS.

U should try some other games and see how u get on. Also, post your 3dm06 score. While not always a great indication of game performance it will give us a directly comparable score for your system.

Actually, if its CPU-bottleneck, then it WILL have similar FPS no matter what setting you put the GFX to. Think about it logically, CPU is stuck at constant rate, the GFX can handle more, so of course 1024x768 will have similar performance vs 1680x1050.
