Difference in 939pin and 754pin A64's??

well im gonna be ordering an A64 system tomorrow and i was wondering the diff between the 754 pin and 939 pin processors?? what is the diff?? lol which is a better processor, i was thinking the 939 3000+

Socket 939 has dual channel memory controllers, while socket 754 is only single channel memory controller. 754 is being phased out this year. 939 is the new replacement for socket 754 and socket 940 in the desktop market. Socket 940 is still used on the server chips though.

Furthermore, 939 chips are built in 90nm process, while 754 chips are 130nm. As a result, Winchesters are smaller, need less voltage (1.4 @ stock) and are cooler. As a byproduct, the Winchester has a higher OC tolerance (most run up to 2500 MHz and higher) since it can be run at higher speeds with cooler temps.

Go for skt 939 as thats the mainstream one for future upgradeability.

 

i have a 3200+ L2 1mb socket 754, and is a good cpu.

the diference with a socket 939 is minimal

so won't there be any faster cpu comming to the 700pin board then the 3700 ?

 

nope sorry, i feel ya who went and got the 64 early, should have waited a little while so they could work out the bugs and get new boards in production, but oh well

 

Something like this will probably happen to Socket 939 in H1-H2 06 when the new chips with DDR2 or 3 controllers come out with new socket. Until then Socket 939 will be around a bit. Besides, most of the info about those chips are pure speculation, with no foundation in fact.

 

I'm still upset to see Intel having DDR2 support while the AMD 64-bit suffer with DDR1...

Oh well.

There really isn't much of a speed increase from 754 to 939 even though 939 is able to run dual channel. I'm currently running a 754 cpu and it's not holding me back at all. But if I was to upgrade again I'd of course go with 939 b/c it is the new cpu socket standard and b/c of it's cooler temperatures.

 

well its not a very expenisve upgrade upping your motherboard ...

maybe you lose 80 euro or something for one ....

I think I'll wait for the next socket with DDR2/3 for my following upgrade ....

my amd 64 3200 Ocable to 2.5 ghz or something ( don't know its top ) ghz serves my needs at the moment .... even at stock ( somehow its 2.3ghz with my mobo set to preformance ) its good

 

Boards really aren't the concern here. They're the cheap parts when talking chipsets..... When I bought my board it was $117, and the CPU $280...... By the time your ready to upgrade, you'll be getting a whole different CPU all together....You probably won't be sad that you couldn't put a 939 CPU in thats only 200mhz faster with a few HT boosts. Upgrading to a socket 939 these days is a mere $80+ dollars. Compared to the GPUs we buy and the price of the higher 939s (CPUs), thats chicken feed.

 

What was that extra pin for.. socket 939 -> socket 940. I have a dual opteron socket 940 setup.

You have it backwards. Currently DDR is faster than DDR2. When DDR2 667 is eventually mastered, than AMD will be ready for a massive launch with DDR2 support.

AMD is currently completing a High End Athlon 64-FX Dual Core Chip @ 2.80Ghz per CPU w/ 2 128MB DDR2 667 Integrated Memory Controllers & w/ 3 possibly 4 HTT links running @ CPU Core Frequency.

Intel’s answer to AMD’s solution is likely going to be “like always” having Dual Core’s with 4MB L2 cache.
