5.7GHz at 1KW, that should be 800+ AMPs @.1.55V for 6.1GHz, I am surprised LGA socket pins did not melt.

6GHz is pretty nice but... useless information since LN2 isn't stable for 24/7 usage.

It's irrelevant how much one can push it, or how much the chip consumes doing it.
I'd love to know how the motherboard didn't blow up though, a CPU using 1Kw sounds extreme to me.

I wonder how long this cpu/mobo would survive if kept at these settings for more than 1 day. o_O

But yeah... extreme OC, extreme power usage, extreme price...

I have a feeling though, that this cpu, even at stock settings will be near melting. Probably a good AIO will be the minimum cooling wise.

Damn. That´s pretty extreme and impressive. When are getting 6ghz clocks out of the box? giggity

I wonder if the instability had more to do with the power delivery rather than the chip itself. Assuming he used an Asus board, those "only" have 12 power pins. To my recollection, each 4-pin cluster supports up to 144W. If you also account for the 12v provided by the motherboard, in a best case scenario, the CPU power delivery would be rated up to roughly 600W, more or less. Meanwhile, the RAM, GPU, and maybe any fans may also use 12v. Seeing as this was to be just a CPU benchmark, there is absolutely no way all the other components make up for the rest of the 400W, which means that PSU was being pushed WAAAAY beyond what it should have for just a CPU.

Sure, you can go beyond the industry standard rating on PSUs, the wires, and their connectors by a few percentile without problems. But to nearly double the recommended load? The power delivery must've been the failure point.

All that being said, I want to know what PSU he was using because if concentrating ~900W out of 12 pins didn't blow it up then that's a very well-made product.

Such amount of ampers should have destroyed the current paths (conductors) to and through CPU/mobo CPU socket within a 100th of a second.

So if I drive my car off a cliff and reach 300mph on the way down that makes me a car overclocker? And to what use?

it would prove that your car done 300 mph without any extra horsepower, in fact the engine was possibly idling - that would be a remarkable feat!

Do us a favour, use a head cam and get someone to youtube it - it would be a sensation :D

Awesome achievement, shame these chips cost nearly £2,000 a piece.

Kinda makes Threadripper a no brainer tbh.
