This game got rave reviews and I bought it on a whim (long ago) but quickly discovered it was designed for sadomasochists. To me it didn't seem challenging, it seemed outright cheap, not even giving a chance.

It's been sitting behind me, in my row of PS3 games giving me the evil look for too long so I said screw it and decided to try it once again.

I've been playing for hours (in fact I had to restart (new character) after I made good progress) now and my conclusion is the same, there is a difference between being challenging and being outright cheap. It doesn't need skill, it simply requires the player to be insanely slow and methodical with everything and still craps on that with instant death traps. It really is made for sadomasochists

I read some guides to make a strong build, as usual the guide screwed me and I put too much points into strength (22 instead of 18) and being a sadistic game of course there is no way to reset stats.

I chose to go with the Blueblood Swordsman build since it seemed the most interesting. To get the Blueblood Sword that requires going from world 1-1 to 4-1 (for gear) to 5-1, 5-2 then 5-3 to get the demon soul required.

To say that it world 5 is hell is an understatement, I've never suffered more playing a video game than 5-2 in this game. It's been a long time since a game literally made me suffer. The entire atmosphere is gloomy and depressing as all hell and is poisonous, constantly eating away at your character. I read ahead and loaded up with a regenerating ring and shield before entering and I had a nightmare of time beating it. I can't imagine how it would have been for someone who didn't know what was coming and not loaded with gear to fight off the poison. There was some cheap death trap combined with more poison at every turn.

It was so horrible I don't even feel like going to 5-3 now so I can finally get that Blueblood Sword which was the goal from the beginning. World 5 is called "The Valley of Defilement". That's understatement, I feel defiled playing through the first two parts of it.

Till it gets moved, there is a Demon's Souls thread, and in addition I don't know why you are going for a custom specialized character with your first play through. You should be trying to play a regular character, I recommend the soldier playing with a shield/spear and balancing your stats as you deem necessary.

Those types of builds and guides are designed for people who have played the game like 20x and can pretty much run though everything memorized. The game levels are also designed so that you shouldn't do a whole lot of jumping around unless you are having trouble with a level. For example, I did a lot of Boletariate Palace and the fire caves to level up, get grass, and upgrade my weapons and never even got to the 4/5 worlds until they were almost a piece of cake.

The guides for the levels @ demonsoulswiki are immensely helpful.

imo, the place you can level up the fastest is the world with the rolling skeletons and such. the very begginining of the level is really really good for farming.

    also, Dragon Bone Smasher FTW!!

I used the search function before making this thread, it didn't show a result. Either way the previous thread is probably over a year old now.

As for the character, I can't imagine playing the game as a melee char to start. The only way I get by at the start is with the Royalty's Soul Arrow and Fragrant Ring to restore Mana. For example I doubt any other starting class can take out the Red Eye Knight at 1-1 at the very start. Well, maybe with a bow, lots of arrows and lots of patience.

I don't know what you mean regular character, the stats required for the Blueblood Sword didn't really make the game any harder. 18 str, 18 dex, 18 magic and 18 faith.

5-2 was the only place that really bothered me because of the ambience combined with the unparalleled cheapness. The character is constantly losing HP due to the poison and can't move for **** due to the water/slime yet everything else magically moves just fine. That makes fighting, oh say, four or five giants as the same time ridiculous, you can't move fast enough to evade their attacks. Blocking is useless, they still kill in 2 hits in body form even with the Hyper Dragon Shield of Blocking Everything + 10.

I played through the game and a newgame+ (increased difficulty) using my soldier character, used no ranged magic at all, basically the only spell I used was the protection shield (cant remember correct name),

Got myself a meat cleaver, purple flame sword and old king armor to keep weight low enough to allow full speed dodging etc

At no point would I say I found the game to be cheap, hard definitly but as long as you learn to play your character and the tactics of the bosses then it's simply a challenging game, which tbh after the first playthrough I found the newgame+ to be a bit of a breeze since I knew exactly what to do, despite the increased difficulty.

My response to being a regular character was only in so much that I've seen builds that basically ignore certain stats that new players desperately need (like health) and vetren players can get by without it because they are skilled enough and know the game well enough.

I was also pointing out that with a character like a soldier you can use the shield/spear combo that allows you to block and attack without your shield being lowered, and soldier seemed good for making a "jack of all trades" in terms of Strength, Endurance, Health, Dexterity as I used spear/two-handed sword, dragon long sword, purple shield, spiked mace, the best armor, and bows (eventually white bow). In that I mean if you make a character that is primarily offensive you are going to really get hurt by some of the creatures when you get hit. I tried to balance offense/defense as well as melee/ranged and armor/dodge with my character and it helped me through the game (as well as a large health bar).

The game has a great many play styles none necessarily better than the other, I only mentioned my experiences so that maybe you could learn something that would help you with yours.

I totally agree with OP but it was still a fun game. It made me ragequit SO many times, I stopped playing it for a week but dived into again. Unfortunately, my PS3 died and never got the chance to finish it! :(

You can fix your PS3 by re-flowing the separated part(s) (usually the GPU, but you can do all to be safe) with rosin flux then heating them up with a heat gun (because you can't use an oven due to irremovable plastic parts on the mobo).

I repaired a friend's dead PS3 that way. I never had to repair mine since I took it apart while it was new and connected the heatsink properly and put some real thermal past on it... that and I go out of my way to make sure the PoS remains as cool as I can keep it.

As for the game itself... I wish that stupid guide told me by the time I get the Blueblood Sword that's half the game done!

    - 1-1 is mandatory
    - All of world 2 to unlock the ability to make the BB Sword
    - 4-1 is absolutely necessary for gear
    - 4-2 to get Saint Urbain to learn miracles (I wish I did this)
    - All of world 5 to get a broken sword (base material) and the Pure Blood Demon's Soul

I wish I actually did it in that order, that would have made things a lot easier. The guide I read said "Durrr, go to teh world 5 and beat it to get BBS, herpity derp". This was really screwed up for me since I had no one to learn miracles from, the dude in my game disappeared and never returned.

So as you can guess I entered world 5 as a wiener and exited as Hercules. After I finished the literally agonizing world 5 everything else seemed a breeze in comparison.

At this point in the game I just Hulk smashed King Doran in direct melee duel with my Blueblood Sword pumped by 9001 stats in luck and my +10 Purple Flame Shield. Yeah, the dude who makes players cry by dodging everything then 1 hit killing them. Now that I have King Doran's gear so my stamina recovers far faster the game is even easier.

My biggest beef with the game is denial of basic freedom and being forced to kill the good guys (like King Doran) to get what you need.

Not being able to pause is just a super-douche move on behalf of the developers. That combined with it saving any time to screw you over is just intolerable. Obviously I try to watch for when the auto-save function works and I noticed it saves (you can see the save symbol) at checkpoints in worlds (usually where the fog barrier is/was) and whenever you pick up an item or do something in the menu.

Knowing when it shows the auto-save symbol I tried killing an NPC just to see how it goes, the blacksmith. Sure enough the auto-save symbol did not appear so I figured I'm safe (I would have shut off the PS3 instantly if I did see it). I loaded the game... SURPRISE!! Loading a game after you kill an NPC will save the game before loading it! So now I have to travel to 2-1 every time I need a blacksmith.

Obviously not being allowed to load when you die (all the time) is just as douchey as not allowing to pause.

I hate the world tendency and character tendency nonsense as well as I said because it's really poorly implemented especially when you're FORCED to be the bad guy to get what you need. That includes choosing the evil ending otherwise you don't get the soul worth 200000 and the red stone to be able to PvP.
