SSD's don't replace HDD's, at least in the current form, they compliment each other. SSD's are great for OS and main programs (basically what you put on it depends on the size) and HDD's are great for storage of music, documents, and media where speed isn't so much of an issue. The unfortunate thing is the standard documents folder is on C drive by default, meaning people choke their SSD's with music and video's. This may mean that future programs are installed on the slower HDD. Most people would just go, 'ooh, 2TB (or whatever) space, I'll chuck all my programs on there'.
Soon...soon a 512GB SSD will be a reasonable purchase. Probably another two years for it to drop to $200. For now, I can drag it out on the 256GB SSD.
Best upgrade i ever did. Can´t imagine going back to a hdd as boot drive. Now i want ssd storage drives at friendly prices.
The problem with SSDs is that, while they're terrific for installing Windows onto and they're getting better value all the time thanks to price drops, the ever-increasing size of media files and games means that they're still not ideally suited for data storage or game installations. Hard drives offer far better value for money and SSDs will have a hard job competing against the massive storage they offer and their comparatively lower prices. I have a 256 GB SSD plus 4.5 TB of hard drive storage, including two backup drives. That would cost me a fortune if I replaced them with SSDs.
Heh only something Windows has a problem with. With Linux it's pretty easy to just symlink your media to another drive. I recently got a 64GB SSD, and I was considering dual booting with Windows on it. I decided against it once I realized that I'd have lost about 1/5 of the entire drive JUST for the OS, an OS that I barely use. That isn't acceptable to me. If MS really wants to target mobile platforms and make SSDs a more considerable thing to buy, they really need to tone down the bloat. Windows 8 was supposed to but it just ended up having less features than 7 while still being as disk and RAM hungry as 7. There's a reason why XP shipped with netbooks for such a long time.
Nah. You can do something similar in Windows. Not very hard. Right click such a special folder (My Documents, etc.) and tell Windows to move it to another drive (by selecting the Location tab in Properties). It will transfer the folder and its files to the specified drive and software will use that location from then on. I've done so myself. Works fine in W7.
I have SSD in 2 laptops and most PCs in my company. (64-256GB). One of the best upgrades i made in couple of years.
Its coming much sooner imo. Take a look at the Crucial M500, 960GB for under £500. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/05/08/review_crucial_m500_960gb_ssd/ Only 52p per GB (not 48p as claimed in the article though). edit Ah, at the end of the article they state the price as £466, so it is 48p/GB.
awesome SSD's are the best upgrade for a PC I use 5 SSD's in my main PC and a 1tb USB3 drive for backups and photos ( I also use microsoft cloud for photo backup)
Yeah, its coming. You can currently get an M500 960 GB (when in stock) at Newegg for right around $600, which isn't a bad price honestly.
I remmber when i first booted up on new SSD, speed incrase was unbelievable something like when we jumped to the dual core cpus. It is really ground breaking technology for laptops especially.
Yep best upgrade i ever made 3 years ago. I paid €400,- back then for a 160GB Intel X25M Gen2, prices have come down greatly since then. My setup: 128GB Crucial M4 (OS\Programs) 160GB Intel X25M Gen2 (Games). 2TB WD Green (Data) Got another 80GB Intel X25M laying around here somewhere ...
Very similar to my storage setup and something I recommend people consider. Raid is another consideration, but mostly just getting people to consider ssd is a challenge.
Along with haswell, one is definitely going in my next build. Sadly I think I'll buy a 128 and try to cram everything on to it. Haha, delete games when I'm "done" playing them.
