8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD? It's like an upper entry level or lowest mainstream consumer PC. Why would they even bother to begin from there? Because it's Dell, I suppose.
Nope, you read that correct. It can have up to a 1TB of DDR4 ECC memory, up to 32GB AMD Radeon PRO W6800 or up to 48GB NVIDIA RTX A6000 graphics. I have been waiting for this to come out to get one of our engineers upgraded from a Precision 7920 with a 16GB Nvidia Quadro RTX5000, 96GB DDR4 2933MHz ECC memory, and an Intel Xeon Gold 6242 2.8GHz (3 .9GHz Turbo, 16C, 22MB Cache processor. The Threadripper Pro will help save a lot of time in rendering projects in Rhino 6, Orca3D Level 2, and Simerics CFD software. After customizing the build, that thing is not going to be $5000. Well aware of the cpu and what it is capable of, yet, I cannot believe (or I cannot remember) you can only fit DDR4 modules to the MB it uses. It's 2022, nearly 2023 (holidays, black Friday, just a few weeks away now) and yet, we got memory modules being used which became obsolete in mid-2020 ? C'mon, considering the throughput of that cpu, do you not think it would need faster memory? What am I missing here?
you people know that these are just the base models right? and DD4 is the compatible memory for the Chipset, whatever? come on...
8 Channels of DDR4 is plenty fast for most things. A Ryzen 5600 with 2 channel 3600 memory is around 50gb read according to guru3d, so 8 channel could potentially be 150-200gb/s with cheap memory, so maybe a 12900k at DDR5 10.000 speeds would be able to keep up with a Threadripper pro.
It's a Zen3 CPU - of course it only supports DDR4. Threadrippers tend to be a little late to the party too; expect DDR5 compatibility a year from now.
Threadripper Pro 5000 is the same architecture as Ryzen 5000 and Epyc Milan. This workstation is only being released now because Lenovo had timed exclusivity for the cpus. These cpus launched half a year ago. Plus they have 8 memory channels and lower core clock speeds than consumer desktop cpus so DDR4 is good enough.
