    Hello everyone
I have wondered about something. My graphic card has a total available graphic memory of 2687Mb. It is using the shared 1791Mb now. Can I assign more RAM to the graphic card by using some kind of software? Riva tuner might do the trick?

you have a GTX 295? the 295 has 892MB on each card, but it is mirrored for each card thus having a total graphics memory of 892MB.

even if you could share system memory, it would give NO performance seeing as how regular RAM is much too slow for the GPU to use anyways.

    basically, no you cannot.

    Actually, you can.

It is built into windows operating systems.

that said, you will gain no performance with your 295gtx.

If you had an old 32 meg graphics card, then it would help.

What do you mean it's mirrored? It should have a total of 1791Mb?

SLi mirrors memory data on both sets of RAM (896MB x2), so it's the same texture data and everything so that both GPUs can trade off the work load without running into issues (1st GPU renders the first frame, 2nd GPU renders the second frame, 1st GPU renders the third frame, and so on).

Last I checked, there's really no way to change RAM allocation. The BIOS and your OS handles it all.

the extra available memory is what windows allocates to its 3d interface and will give no benefit in 3d gaming

i may be wrong but its never helped me in games at all

I disagree. if it could be used it would be good. nvidia uses gddr3 thats same as system ram ddr3

ati uses gddr5 yet that doesnt seem to help much

Avivoni needs to learn computer math :p.

There is a big difference between DDR and GDDR, and this all comes back to the width of the controller interface.

As of today, the fastest DDR controllers are on the i7, and only reach a max theoretical performance equalling that of a 6800Ultra

    Tri Channel = 192b
    Dual Channel = 128b
    Single = 64b.

on triple channel, 1.6Ghz DDR3 has a peak rate of about 38GB/s, however its rarely possible to reach half of that.

Each memory stick contains several 8, 16 or 32b modules, depending on the amount of chips and density of those chips.

The modules on a GFX card work differently, each module is directly connected to the memory controller via a 32bit interface, so either 16x32b on Nvidia's current fastest single core card, or 8x32 on ATI's current fastest, (512b v 256b)

    @ Squall Leonhart

thanks mate, this is quite good explained..

but still it doesnt explain why it says 4095mb memory avaiable on my 512 mb card...

    but anyway THX..^^
