Ok, I want some honest opinions here. What do most of you think would be better to run, a 6800 Ultra, or a 7600GT(both either in single or SLI mode)?? I have been doing A LOT of research trying to decide which specific card I want to order, and came across this debate tonight. Yes, I know the 7600GT is the new breed just released, and the 6800 Ultra is aging, but compare the difference:
7600GT Has a faster core & memory clock, compared to the 6800 Ultra. BUT, the 6800Ultra has 16pipes compared to the 7600GT's 12pipes. The 6800Ultra also has a 256mb/256bit compared to the 7600GT's 256mb/128bit. So which would actually perform better?? The 7600GT I want is around $230, and the 6800Ultra I just found is $260. Just looking for some opinions to help make my decision before I order. Links for the 2 cards I am looking at are below incase ya wanna check anything out. Thanks in advance for the input here. Later! :givebeer:

    eVGA 7600GT CO Superclocked 256mb/128bit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130284

*This is another I am considering, not sure though, 'cuz I don't know if I want to order one "pre-clocked", or overclock it myself when I get it, plus I notice some run 1.4ns memory & some run 1.6ns memory:

    Leadtek PX7600GT TDH 256mb/128bit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814122245

I'd say 6800Ultra. It may not bench quite as high, but the 256bit makes quite a difference in gaming.

As a matter of fact, i have two of them sitting on my desk right now, waiting for me to get a paycheck or two to get a motherboard and cpu to throw them on.

So, my vote is for them. :)

7600GT. You get that adaptive AA, which really makes a difference. Plus 6800Ultra is very power hungry. Comes with 2 molex connectors and you're advised to connect them to different rails if possible...

  5. Well, thats a tough descision. Though overall you'd probably get better IQ with the 6800Ultra's, because of their 256 bit memory not holding as much back when you enable all of the eye candy like AA, AF ect. Look at Hilberts review to see what I mean, when you enable a lot of the good stuff with the 7600's you lose a lot of performance. If you however don't use AA & AF (and honestly who dosen't?) then the 7600's would be better, as evidenced by their scores with no bells and whistles.

Well, I'd say the the 6800 Ultra since you should be able to OC that one more. The 7600 doesn't have any power connector so you can't really OC too much.

I'd say 7600GT, just as fast, cheaper, less power-hungry, more features.

That the 6800Ultra has two molex connectors (on AGP at least) doesn't mean it can be overclocked higher!!

If you're going to get a 6 series, you may as well get the 6800GT and OC it to ultra speeds. It should be a fair bit cheaper and perform just as well.

    Hmmm.......

Lots of various opinions I see. Thanks guys. One quick question also, anyone of you or someone you know have a decent luck with a 6800XT?? Reason for asking is at NewEgg you can pick up a 256mb/256bit XT for $100, so hell for $200 I could set up an inexpensive SLI rig. If I had waited a bit longer, I coulda spent the $200 I did on my 6600GT(4 months ago) on a different card lol And since I haven't had much chance to play with the 6800 really I wonder what the XT might get for clock speeds. One guys said he easily hit 450/1100, which isn't too bad. The main reason I am hesitant about the 7600 is because it is ony a 128bit card, woulda been nice if they had made it 256mb/256bit instead(which I think they should've to begin with) Might just say piss on it and get a 7800GT for now. Just curious what some of you guys think who have had more experience with different GPU's. Thanks guys..

  14. Well I'm speaking from expierence, I own 11 cards ATM. Honestly if you can afford a 7800GT, then what are you waiting for? A 7800GT is still a very capable card, and if you go SLI later on you'll still be at the head of the pack. Performance wise a 7800GT is almost as powerful as a 6800GT SLI set up and not far behind a 7600GT SLI setup. I wouldn't go for the 6800XT option though as there is no guarantee that they will unlock successfully, you may get 16p 6vp on one but on the other you may only get 12p 5vp, it's just a matter of luck which one you get.

I vote 7600 GT, will play just about any game at 1280x1024 res with max quality and with newer features and it costs less. and if you're planning to be playing new games at higher than 1280x1024 res then you'd want something better than the 6800 ultra anyway :)

How is it obsolete? My 6800GT runs all games at max settings 1280x1024. Well every game I've played. Its far from obsolete.
