It's really shameful that EA didn't make any effort at all to correct the game's traversal stuttering. Yet using Frostbyte I'm sure they could have fixed it not even that hard.
The game was really abandoned after a short time, and the support on this title is about as bad as I have seen in recent years

That happens with too many games published by EA. They just abandon their own games very fast.

I tried disabling CFG for this game, but that did nothing.

There are talks that Motive is working on an Ironman license game, so probably majority of staff was moved to that project as soon as possible whilst some small fraction is pre-producing remake of second dead space.

Same happens to me as well but the the rest of the game is really smooth and very well optimized. I can even use ultra settings + RTAO and still be above 60fps.

I'm surprised you never played it! This game is a gem and I'm on my third playthrough. Game plays really well now post patch updates after the shaders have all been compiled.

Regarding traversal stuttering, if you tried the CFG trick already, then I would suggest going further and disable all VBS stuff in your UEFI BIOS and in Windows unless you're doing security sensitive stuff on your PC. Also, if you're using MSI Afterburner or some other performance monitoring software, then I recommend turning off GPU power usage polling as that is known to cause micro stutters during gaming.....at least on Nvidia GPUs, but it may also affect AMD GPUs.

Eliminating traversal stuttering in this game is a bit more tricky, because the game doesn't really cache much data like other games as it is constantly decompressing, streaming and vacating data from both RAM and VRAM due to the completely seamless nature. So in this case, having faster CPU, RAM and storage makes a huge difference.

That said, it can't be totally fixed because ultimately it's also caused by an engine limitation. I have said it before, but EA Motive had to overhaul the streaming algorithm of the engine to make the Dead Space remake totally seamless as that was not a feature of the engine. And while the streaming algorithm was much improved with post patch updates, it will definitely need further improvements to really eradicate it on PC.

I would really love to see EA continue to invest more resources into the Frostbite engine, because the Dead Space remake is graphically stunning (especially in terms of dynamic lighting and shadows, polygon count, and environmental interactivity) and still runs at high framerates due to excellent CPU and GPU utilization. Frostbite engine can really give Unreal Engine 5 a run for its money if they continue to develop it and make it more versatile.

This is a great remake so it's a real shame that the developers never bothered to fix the annoying traversal stutter.

What makes this worse is that the original game, which while graphically weaker, does not have any stuttering at all and runs flawlessly on my PC. They really should have had the game load in the assets like the original game during elevator rides and door opening sequences rather than as you are walking toward a new area as with the increased speed of modern SSDs the waiting times would have been about the same or slightly quicker (bearing in mind that texture sizes are substantially larger than the original game and that the traversal stutters themselves are relatively brief suggesting that loading times are very fast). It might have increased the system requirements but it would have made for a better game for sure.

I tried deleting the cache files as suggested and reloaded my save after the shaders had been freshly compiled for the first time since launch without changing my graphics settings and I saw the exact same traversal stutters as I walked around the section I am currently on. Walked back and the same hitches occurred in the same places. This is not shader compilation stutter but traversal stutter. I have the game capped at 120 fps using RTSS and the stutters cause the game to drop down to 108 or 109 fps for a split second with a noticeable hitch. It is possible that capping it to 90 fps or even 60 fps would make the stutters less noticeable - I will try this later - but the point is that they would still be there. These stutters are still present in the console versions as far as I am aware from the Digital Foundry coverage of the remake.

I already did all of that. Still has stutters. It's mostly when entering new areas.
Asides from that, it runs very well. Almost a complete flat line for the frame time graph.

I was never much into horror games, so this game was never on my radar when it came out originally.
But now I'm making up for it. :D

That post only concerns shader compilation which the game precompiles (well, most of them) either way.
This has no relation to traversal stutters which will always occur in same places no matter how many times you pass the boundary.

Unless you can produce a video evidence with frametime graph to prove that you're somehow immune to core engine design of this game, this is just a blind claim.

Maybe he's playing it with a 30 fps cap or something, which can be used as a workaround for traversal stutter, although it is far from an ideal solution?

Hi again! After Resident Evil 4 Remake, which is a fine entertaining horror shooter and one of the best technically done PC games we have today, which didn't even have any major launch problems, I'm now playing Dead Space Remake. I'm five hours in and I guess I'm already enclined to say what I like better and what not compared to the original:

Obviously, the graphics are very good, but on medium settings, which I have to use, The Callisto Protocol looked noticeably better. To me it seems, that Dead Space would look pretty impressive even on high preset, but alas, this game is seriously demanding, though it is not at all badly optimized, not a RAM/VRAM hog or anything. The game stutters at the beginning which can be worrying, but it's just the shader compilation, which finishes soon enough, around 15 minutes in or 30 minutes at max. Traversal stutters are very minor in my opinion, because they are not frequent, happen when nothing is going on and are very brief too.
The visual style, which means the artistic approach, as I would put it, is more entertaining, pleasing to look due to the colors, especially if you own a good HDR capable display I presume (I don't), but the gray style of the original is the perfect look in my opinion for the theme - hence, it chimes with the title (notion: gray + brown was a common palette in the PS3/X360 era, though not every game was appealing to look at with the style). This remake doesn't feel that scary to me due to it's style and the monster behavior, even if it's darker, which you get used to, but at least five hours in it hasn't added anything other than contrast to scenes and having to use your light all the time. Something about the animations and sounds in the OG were creepier and even the voice lines had some slight unnatural vibe to them - everything in the OG tries to spell the theme, 'dead space' where you are alone being trapped. The remake has great voice acting, I really like it, and the added lore is cool too, but again, these changes feel entertaining and amusing, but less scary. Also I feel you have to collect more loot in the remake, which I guess some gamers might strangely enjoy (heh, check Outer Worlds for reference if you think more loot is good), though please correct if I'm wrong about the amount - it's not a big deal in any case.
For the gameplay part, the smoother movement is okay, certainly doesn't hurt, though we have to remember, that the movement is stiff for a reason in the OG, for the sake of theme, tension and horror, so perhaps the team behind this remake, or some of them, liked a bit more the second game, so they emulated it. What is certainly cool is the added areas and if I recall correctly, the original didn't have any real backtracking, or at least not like in the remake, but I really don't remember too well, even if I played the OG twice when it was new.

I would already conclude, that the things the remake adds are nice. The tweaks to the gameplay makes the game easier to approach. It is the version to pick if you want to be slightly more "in control" and less tense, enjoy a well designed horror shooter, while the original is for those who want the maximum atmosphere and scariness, though I'm not saying even the original is super scary, certainly not Amnesia: The Dark Descent scary (I played Amnesia back then in the dark with headphones and remember sweating up and getting anxious almost, but did enjoy it!). Unlike some internet folks might have stated (read a Steam review which said this), this remake definitely does not replace the original in my opinion; there is still reason to play the original, because both games have their own tone and I'm confident enough to say that the remake also is recommendable, so if you really liked either one and want to play again, I seriously recommend to pick the other one next.

EDIT. I had to check if the enemy behavior and spawning are different in the remake and I read they are. I already knew that in the remake the enemy doesn't get stunned by shooting, or not as often, so they approach relentlessly, but that doesn't make the game more scary, but rather the combat more hectic. I'm trying to figure why exactly the remake feels less scary, not that I have a problem with this, I enjoy the game, but it is interesting from a design perspective.

EDIT2. Check this clip for instance.

EDIT3. After finishing the remake I cannot openly recommend it, so I added the strikethroughs. I cannot say that there is any indisputable reason to play it over the original, but it is not a bad game by any means.

Alright, I have pretty intensively played this game the last few days and now it's done - a spoilery notion though:
Actually I didn't kill the final boss, because I dislike how failing the last sequence, where it grabs you, puts you back to the beginning of the fight. Otherwise the boss was pretty easy, beat it on first try.
My final thoughts are more negative than in my last post, because overall, the game seems to be strongly casualized. It suffers from the common sin of modern games, that not so many people seem to complain about, which is too slowly increasing difficulty. Only in the end you have more enemies at once, while the original starts to push you way earlier. The gameplay changes are the worst part here, because it makes the experience lame, and I don't think any of the added stuff is that beneficial either. More lore is okay, but it wasn't that well fitted in, while the voice acting was pretty well done, but it was written somewhat immaturely with the frequent swearing. The plot changes and how things get explained in a simpleton manner rip the vagueness and mysteriousness of the original's great plot. Especially the ending was not well done, because it made the marker seem like some sort of tactician with a brain. This review's general tone is something I would agree on.

I edited my last post, since I cannot actually recommend this remake, at least not over the original by any stretch, but for a certain group of people it can fit:
    - If you do marvel the graphics, the remake offers the visual fidelity.
    - If you find the original too hard, too tense, too scary, too stiff, whatever, the remake is a casualized, toned down experience
    - If you think Dead Space 2 was better than Dead Space 1 because it had more action overall, or preferred it for other reasons like Isaac having a voice, then the remake might be your thing with it's changes to storytelling and fluider movement.

Only thing I can think the remake improved, is the redone 'zero gravity', where you can fly now fluidly and through it the 3D space is well utilized. Any other thing, even the sound design and the visual style, since the game is pretty darn dark with constant saturated hues, are worse. As I said in the last post, the monsters do not sound as threatening and there are much less moments of fighting in space and those moments are not tense at all; space makes sounds completely muffled and quiet, in the original creating this tense moment of isolation, not hearing your enemies at all - this is one example of the fine use of audio in that game.
Yet about the monsters, only once there was a body that seemed dead but suddenly attacked, and grabs were rare too. I played on 'normal', so that might affect the rate, though the game's menu says that 'hard' increases the damage taken while less afflicted, which sounds to me the most boring way of upping difficulty, which is way too common these days. I much rather have more monsters, respawning enemies, less resources, or whatever gameplay changes that actually alters the experience, rather than just having to dodge more and shoot more carefully. Also the monsters did not sneak up on me more than two times I recall, so watching your back is needless.

I noticed that I did not own the original game, so I purchased it for five euros (I pirated games in my teens). I might actually play the original next on 'hard', because I tried the difficulty back then, but even playing on keyboard and mouse, I quickly found it really tough. Today I play many of my games on a controller, which I'm not remarkably adept at, so shooters are this way truly tough on higher difficulties for me, but I'll give it another try nevertheless. If I manage to play the original far enough, I will possibly post here more, making further comparisons from fresh memory.

The bottom line: The remake might fit some players, but not likely keen fans of the horror genre. For those who have played the original, it is disappointing, but still enjoyable enough. It is not a faithful remake for many parts and not the definitive edition to play, but in the case you have a beefy rig, you might as well try the free trial, which thankfully exists (props for that!).

A performance related note: The hitches got worse till the end and in the final chapter framerate often dipped in certain areas - the game is truly demanding.

I bought it yesterday, looks good. Textures could be a bit better though. Scary vibe is there so that's good too :D

But, this game likes turbo avx2 or even 512?, I mean 50% overall cpu usage and 69-74C with 150-170w... no game had it this high during gameplay,.. I have both avx unlocked, guess I'll have to use offsets.. By shader compilation it was 75-84c and 100% 260w, same as cinebench.. I thought it would explode jk lol :D

About the traversal stutters, it's very minor but enough to get annoyed by it, at least it's not during combat, and If I want ok performance I need dlss quality at 1620p dsr, then it's 90-130fps , otherwise just 45-50fps with TAA at 1620p dsr, rest at high or ultra, rtao.

It's a steam version and old 512.95 atm, the game warned me I need min 527.xx, but works ok with 512.95.

Also, I enabled ReBar in nvinspector, I think some mentioned it runs faster with it enabled, is this true?

I absolutely loved the Dead Space remake.
Traversal stutters do pop up, but are so small... I barely noticed and they did not impact my enjoyment of the game at all.
Felt it was a gorgeous, and faithful remaking of one of my all time favorite games.

I loved the expanded and new areas, and reworking on classic scenes.

My only disappointment, is how little post-release support there's been.
People want to dog on Callisto Protocol, but they've been keeping updates and support going. Where as DS... seems to be left as is.

Both games are pretty good and both have minor stutters but nothing major. Also both were crash free for me aswel.
