    OK Question is:

    8600GT 256MB DDR3 or 8600GT 512MB DDR2

they cost exactly the same ($100). and you are building this computer to play CoD4. which is the better choice? - and NO you cannot change the budget which is $100.

thanks guys for reading my first post!

What resolutions are you going to be playing at and what's the rest of your PC specs? (cpu, ram, etc) ?

Generally, the ddr3 version will be faster.

core 2 duo 2.2ghz (maybe overclocked)
    2GB DDR2-800 RAM
SATA 7200rpm 16MB cache buffer hard drive

Dunno what resolution I would be playing at, normal resolution? Most likely looking at a 17" or 19" screen.

IF you can get the extra cash, go with a 8800GT prices are getting better and coming down all the time.

Ok, as you have a good cpu - you'll definitely see a difference from a faster vram, so I'd say that you should get the ddr3 version, as the ddr2 will only slow you down.

Or maybe u shoud look ATI HD3850 that is lot faster.
Its also cheap. ( sorry out of ur money range )
    2-3x faster than 8600GTS.

But for those 2. DDR3 is better.

Yes, go with the ATI 3850. It's a much faster card.

    pay attention...

He's not spending more on a different card! lol, anyway I thought more VRam would be better than faster VRam?

odd that ddr2 and ddr3 of 8600gt cost the same.... different make is it?
anyway, DDR3 always. but i am not sure if 8600gt is powerful enough to run COD4 smoothly even at 1.2kx1k resolution. but since budget on $100 then no other option but the ddr3 variant

The reason they cost the same is, you can either get 512 of DDR2, or 256 of DDR3. Math comes in handy here. . . 1/2 the amount of ram, for the same price, because it's faster. ;-)

Anyway, Since you are only playing on a 17" or 19" monitor, the likelyhood of you playing at a huge resolution is somewhat dim. Based on that, I'd recommend the 256 of DDR3.

Also, anybody happen to notice that a person with an 8800GT recommended an 8800GT? Oh. . . and a person with a Radeon 3850 rec'd. . . get this. . . a 3850. lol Just thought that was funny. :)
