So I read somewhere that you can use the Microsoft Display Dock (compatible with the Lumia 950 etc) with Android, being just an MHL compatible USB and HDMI/DP hub. Turns out Sony have disabled MHL on the Xperia XA1 (my current phone) for no obvious reason. Given the touchscreen is on the fritz, and the fact I rather like the ability to cast via HDMI, can you guys suggest any alternate phones which might do the job as I'm thinking of replacing this one.

Is it disabled via hardware or firmware?

If Firmware, would a custom ROM enable it? Save buying a new phone

You could always buy a Chromecast Ultra Media Player. It is a great device.

Not sure, TBH. It's USB-C so probably firmware. The screen is dying at the edges though, makes typing quite hard, so considering replacing it.

I've considered Chromecast. Not expensive, either.

Most phones don't support MHL, it's not that it's soft disabled. Anyway, nearly all Android devices on 5.1+ should support DisplayLink screen mirroring. I've used my phone (that doesn't support MHL) with a Displaylink dock and had full screen with keyboard and mouse support.
