Currently I have a XFi-Xtreme music PCI, it works fine, but after I sleep Win7 a few times it crackles until a reboot.....

What is a nice card these days?

I've heard nice things about the ASUS cards....

I pretty much only use headphones (Sennheiser HD215's)

The crackle was the same on my 775 rig, and I've always used the latest creative drivers

Budget wise, nothing crazy, under £75.....

I'm using an X-Fi Xtreme Music on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and always constantly in and out of sleep with no problems. The card does crackle every once in awhile in Bad Company 2 and rarely while playing audio via Foobar 2000 w/ WASAPI. I assume this has to do with the board's poor layout chosen by Creative and also the low grade Jamicon capacitors. I replaced the stock JRC opamps on my card with LM4562's and I'm enjoying it, but it has its ups and downs. I think I'm also about ready to retire this and put it in my PC at work and get a new sound card for my main PC.

I'm afraid the old Jamicon caps on your card could have given all they can give - If you inspect the card check for bulging on the top of any of the caps. If you see any bulging or any "goo" leaking, there is your culprit.

I'm using X-Fi driver version 2.18.15, what version are you using grunger ?

Its not so much a crackle as a distortion
Its kind of hard to describe, you know what it sounds when you speak into a fan? - its like that but with a buzz and a hiss around it....

Reboot and all is well for a few days.

    Driver level is 2.18.0015

I have the DX and really love it. Great value for it's sound, i don't see how you could be disappointed if you get it.
