    Hello!

I have an old i5 760(2010) and since 2017 I have it overclocked from 2.9ghz to 3.8ghz.The main reason for the overclock was because I've read that I am gonna have a bottleneck with the new GPU(RX 470) back then.
From reading guides it was saying to not exceed 1.35v and 65-70c under normal usage to be safe and I am lower than that.
The thing is that I don't game and oveclocked or not I do the same job fine without noticing any difference.

I want to keep the system 3-4 years more but will the CPU last that long overclocked?
What does your experience and common sense say?
Is it safe to keep the CPU oveclocked for 3-4 more years or it's better to return to defaults in my occasion?

I had two BIOS profiles on my 2500K. Stock and Overclocked. When I wanted to play a game, I rebooted with the overclocked profile.

I also have two profiles like you but had the overclocked one loaded permanently.I suppose that the answer is that we don't know for sure and what you propose sounds like the wisest thing to do.
I think that I am gonna do the same thing as you said, thank you.

Bit of a necro, however. I had a i7-930 overclocked to 4.4 for ~4 years since brand new. No degradation, then replaced that with a used server pull x5650, pushed it hard and it degraded in 2 years, however it was already however many years old and pulled from server duty. By that time it was ~ 4-5 years old and I had put quite a bit of volts to it.

  5. I have my i7-2600K OCed to 4.8GHz@1.4V since I bought it in 2011 and it has no signs of deterioration. It is watercooled though with temperatures <65C. If you cool it properly and won't push the voltage beyond specs, there is no need to worry.

Same with my 2.7ghz, could run it at 5ghz on water but ran it daily at 2.7 for a good few years, still have it with the block on and ram in sitting in my spare cupboard, maybe I should fire it up as I've a spare WC loop.

Ran my 4770K with a 4,5 GHz OC for 7 years, though only 1.19v.

I've overclocked all my processors going all the way back to my first 486-dx266 and have never had a CPU fail or have performance degradation. If your temps reach near thermal trottling, get a better cooler or fan... and if you're a bit more adventurous, Lap the head-spreader and Delid the chip and put liquid metal on the core. Doing that dropped the temps of my previous CPU, an i5-4670k around 30'c.

    This.

I`ve overclocked all my Intel CPUs so far and i had no problems with any of them.

My current CPU (7600K) as been running at 5.0Ghz without any issue for the last 6/7 years.

Too bad Intel and AMD killed overclocking...

Damage increases exponentially with heat and voltage.
There is a maximum tolerable voltage and the same for heat - either will result in insta death.
When within those boundaries, if both voltage and heat are high it will wear out much faster.
This is why those who water cool can use higher voltage sustained than those who air cool.

If you wish to make an old CPU last, keep it cool and keep the voltage as low as possible.

You should not damage it by overclocking as long as it is well cooled and voltages don't go too high. However using it overclocked when you don't need that extra performance doesn't really make sense. Even if lightly loaded or idle, you still have higher power draw and possibly higher temps. And even though these CPUs are very durable and long lasting any overclocking does increase chance of failure or degradation. So my recommendation is, if you are only using PC for some light office and internet work you don't need overclock and should revert to stock settings.
These older CPUs are soldered so you don't need to delid them. They are still sought after by some enthusiasts who can push them to the limits.

I had 2500k back in the day oc'd to 4.8ghz at 1.44v it was a lousy sample and one day it just become unstable. It tooks some time, years tho but i reduced the clocks to 4.7ghz same voltage everything was stable again.

its current flow that decays the silicon, not the clocks on their own.

get as good an OC as you can while keeping within the VID range for the processor and it'll outlast the operating system's in use.

Don't know much about AMD, but my Intel overclocks (5820K at 4.6GHz) has been going on for over 5 years with no signs of degradation,
I just recently replaced it, 2 weeks ago, with my 5900X in my streaming build.

On full load the 6c/12t 5820K at 4.6Ghz was consuming around 220Watts, my 7950X3D consumes 120Watts for 16c/32t over 4.8GHz on full load?
CPU technology has come a long way in 7years !

    8yrs on a 920 CO at 4ghz 24/7 :) (or more than 8 years, what a trooper of a CPU)

p.s it got damm hot the other day as my fan controller decided to go wonky. Need to rebuild and redo paste soonish but its sitting around 65c...

Still running my AMD 8350 with a Asus CH VI, she's running @ 5.0 ghz but @ 1.55 for power it just won't hold unless at 1.55 not a perfect chip but hasn't made a difference but I got it cooled well and she cruizes too just running it as a Home Theater deal. But no degraded actions yet I bought it when they first came out so its been a while..

Never heard of it. Probably because it doesn't even support Sandy Bridge CPUs.
