Hi guys im thinking of doing an upgrade on my system I'm looking at a AMD 5800x what I was wondering is my existing Noctua NH-U12S SE going to be enough for this cpu? ( single fan ) I only run at 1080p and won't be overclocking at all or would you say get something a bit better? air cooler is preferred as i am on a budget and my case isn't the best for a water-cooled loop. The motherboard will be a MSI Tomahawk x570 Cheers
it should be fine. there are some amazing air coolers for very little price right now. thermalright peerless assassin (can be had for as little as $40/£35) thermalright phantom spirit (same as above but has 7 heatpipes instead of 6) deepcool AK620 (can be expensive if low on stock)
The 5800x runs hot I have 1 too, I'm using a EK240 radiator. There is a couple of AIO's that work good also. Also use curve optimizer it will lower temps and run better also. I'm not OC'ing anything either except my ram @ 3200 with very tight timings and thats all. I'm using an Asus Cross Hair VII x470 MB, I love this chip.
Your Noctua U12 will do fine, is at par with other single tower coolers up to 180-200W. As a small improvement you can change the fan to the one below, runs very well at 1200+/- rpm while still delivering decent pressure and quiet. Akasa 12cm Viper High Performance S-Flow Fan Speed 600 - 1900 RPM Max Airflow 83.63 CFM Max Static Pressure 2.98 mm-H2O Sound Level 6.9 - 28.9 dB(A)
In regards to air coolers, I cannot praise the Deepcool AS500 (plus or not) enough. I got it, trashed the deepcool fan that came with it and installed a single Akasa Viper 140mm. In prime small fft 220W load is at same level with my NH D15, yes that good. It's also very thin, leaves plenty of space at the back to allow airflow and hot air from the video card to exhaust, doesn't block memory etc.
I vote for ID-Cooling SE-226-XT, looks sexy, easily beating Noctua U12A at half the price Tweaktown review I use this cooler with Phantek T30 fan @ 2000rpm, easily cool my 13700KF @ 5.4ghz in gaming workload
Not everyone needs the x3d, it's 1.7x the price of 5700x. I say get the 5700x unless you have a 6800xt/3080 or higher at 1440p. As for the cooler, the u12s will be enough, don't change it. 5700x runs cooler than 5800x and performance is pretty much the same. For 5800x3d you'll need sth better though or it might be hitting +80 degrees too often.
Thanks all, I have been looking at the 5700x too but at least I know that I don't have to fork out for a new cooler for either cpu so that will save a bit of money too. Cheers
Hi there! The Noctua NH-U12S SE is a decent cooler, and it should be able to handle the AMD 5800x at stock speeds without any problems, especially if you're not planning to overclock. The NH-U12S SE has a TDP rating of 120W, and the AMD 5800x has a TDP of 105W, so you should have plenty of headroom. However, keep in mind that the CPU can still get pretty hot under load, and the performance of the cooler can be affected by factors such as the ambient temperature and the case airflow. That being said, if you want some additional cooling headroom, you could consider adding a second fan to the NH-U12S SE to create a push-pull configuration, which can help improve the cooler's performance. Alternatively, you could consider upgrading to a higher-end air cooler, such as the Noctua NH-D15 or the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4, which offer even better cooling performance. These coolers are more expensive, but they should provide you with more headroom if you plan to overclock in the future or if you just want the peace of mind of having better cooling.
