Could it be my memory?

After I've updated my mainboard, CPU and graphics card and a new 256mb DIMM I've been getting strange problems.

Sometimes I'll get dropped to the desktop while playing a game. Sometimes the screen will go black and freeze. And sometimes the computer will just reboot while playing a game or doing something stupid like trying to use my Eudora to check on my email.

I've done all the BIOS tweaking I know to do after going to a zillion web sites for information and following the instructions in the mainboard manual. I've purchased the OCZ Gladiator cooler for the CPU and a slot fan to help cool the GeForce chip. I've removed the side panel because the system is about 15 degrees cooler then with it on......I'll be getting me a new case for overclockers when I get paid next.....

I'm down to one more thing to check out.

I would like to know how to tell the speed of my RAM chips. I know that they are all pc133 but I need to find the latency of the chips.....whether they are CAS2 or CAS3. These chips have all been bought from different places at different times so they all look a little different from each other.

My specs:
Abit KT7A-RAID
512meg RAM (1-256mb and 2-128mb DIMMS)
Athlon 1333mhz
GeForceIII
SB Live!
4 hard drives (over 60gb total)
Creative 52x cd rom
Kenwood 72x true-x
various and sundry other things.

If my memory DIMMS are of different CAS would that be causing these problems? Could it be the DIMM arrangement (maybe put the 256 megger in a different DIMM slot)?

How would I find the CAS rating of these DIMMS?

Thanks for your time.
2. sabdra pro will probably tell you the cas of the memory,
i dont think it's the problem, becaue as far as i know a cas 2 and a cas 3 sicks will just run at cas 3.
it could be a million things causeing this, id advise getting all the latest drivers for all your hardware, and the geforce 3 you probably installed the drivers off the cd, but 3.01 is out now so you might want to get them

This message was edited by Joe tweakfiles on 15 Jun 2001 07:58 AM

I agree, but just in case you think it is the Ram ( I doubt it very much ) then just simply try each chip seperatly.

Try all the companies for updates as Joe tweakfiles suggested including your soundcard as I have had trouble with that in the past.
Also get direct x 8.

Is it all games and applications that bum you out and does it appear completly random or can you predict a time.

Maybe check with norton utilities or something similar for any hardware faults.

If all this still fails have a look around for some fixes related to amd and windows as there are some problems like agp cards and win98 running amd processors.
Good Luck

My main suggestion would be to reinstall Windows. Make sure you have the latest Via chipset drivers on hand when you do this, or you will be kicking yourself.

I'm suggesting this because in your post you didn't say whether or not you did a complete reinstall after building the new system. I had the same problems when I upgraded from a P3-500 with a TNT2 Ultra to this system and about 99% of my problems disappeared with a complete reinstall.

I agree with Fershlugg... I just went the the exact same thing as you are experiencing about 2 months ago. I tried everything I could possibly think of and scanned all the websites too. I found this one that way

Anyway, the only thing that finally did the trick was to reinstall.. Just start from scratch and that should fix the issue. The MS OS's don't like hardware changes on a big scale....

It is either the OS or your graphix card
