We now have RAM optimized for one target platform now?! Vault of fail stuff.

there has been RAM optimized for platforms for decades
    usually Intel

And I have never met them for all those decades.

    Upd: Or you mean XMP?

XMP began as an Intel optimized bios shortcut/preset.
and for years you could buy optimized RAM for either AMD or Intel platforms. only real difference was whether they were recommended by the mobo manufacturer.
and the XMP settings matched the mobo if you bought the right memory. plenty of people over plenty of time have had to manually adjust timings because they bought RAM w/o using the ramchecker.

Ryzen requires certain tertiary timing considerations to achieve stability that often renders a system unstable if not met.

    That`s not "optimization", that`s "compatibility".

Thats what Ryzen Optimized means in a nutshell.

o.k. time lapse blow by blow...
especially since DDR4, but certainly before then -
Intel would push the "tock" with faster cpus w/ new uArch, typically HEDT/Xeon with higher DDR speeds (and timings), the RAM would have to be optimized for the platform (at first same but OC RAM with OC speed)
and that was a drag. then they released XMP to eliminate the necessity of manual timings.
RAM compatibility mode leaves the RAM running at lowest system value, whereas XMP automatically gets a "sweet" clock for the RAM being used so there is a difference between compatibility and optimization
for AMD, Ryzen loves an OC for the RAM and gives extra performance because of the intricacies of Infinity Fabric, so optimization for that is real as well.
