I have a Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2GHz. I recently removed the heatsink(for cleaning) and since my PC runs at 60 degrees. Idles at around 55 degrees. Sometimes (when multiple tabs are open in firefox) the computer hits 70 degrees and shuts down. Yesterday i purchased some thermal compound and applied it to the cpu and heatsink as shown in Rifle_Grunt's guide to building a PC. Now the idle temps are 45 degrees at idle and 68-72 degrees at 100% CPU load(running Prime95). Is this normal..?

Room Temperature is around 35 degrees.
    All temperatures in degrees celcius.

If your on the stock cooler that would seem normal with those kind of ambient temperatures. An aftermarket cooler will greatly reduce the temps of your CPU. Is your current heatsink clean btw? And have you got any extra fans in the case?

by cooler do you mean heatsink+fan..? If yes then i have the stock one. there are no extra fans in the case, unless you count the one in the PSU.
    The heatsink is clean though.

can too much thermal compound reduce the cooling..?

Too much TIM can reduce the cooling. Stick another fan in your case if possible, preferably sucking the air out.

as Bleh! said with stock cooler, these temps are normal.
a cheap ,sturdy, silent aftermarket cooler will do some magic
    here,i advise you this one

Even the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO isn't a bad idea either.
