so my uncle has 500gb HDD one partions for everything, and 240gb inland professional SSD format is like 220gb

Now I want to clone the HDD (only using 188gb out of 500gb) to the SSD with 220gb capactiy and I cant find free software to do this, cause they all seem to want to have 500gb to clone the 500gb too.

I just want OS and all files on the HDD copied on to the SSD which only 188gbs I then want to boot off the the SSD and keep the HDD unplugged.

I thinking about doing shrink partion on the 500gb to 200gb but I never dont that on OS partions and dont want to kill the partition on the HDD cause IF i cant get SSD after it been copied off I have revert back to hdd to try again.

Just shrink the original partition to match the SSDs size.

Shrinking partition doesn`t change anything except the size (right border). Moving partition - i.e. left border - is risky operation.

yah the built function in window 7 for this refused to shrink it by more then 6.7gb which just boggled my mind. I down load macrium reflect trial and it say it will need to shrink the HDD to clone to ssd it is in process of doing this I hope it works.

I just want that data all on the SSD and it to boot up, then I will try and see if this upgrade from win 7 to win 10 works, if all else fails I will just re clone it again, or just reinstall window 7 which i prefer not to do sing it end of life so i hope win 7 to 10 still works like it was mentioned

Clonezilla has your back. But you have to clone partition to hard disk.
More, Clonezilla will clone the used space, not the entire partition which can contain lots of free unused space ( for user). Another thing is for OS.

if its a uefi install, there are some extra steps because the winboot.efi is referenced directly via its physical disk location instead of just as a file reference as legacy boot is.

I will try this if macrium reflect trial fails it at 17% it probably gona take anoher 2 or 3 hours to finish if fails after say it would shrink the 500gb to fit the 220gb after that time I will be pissed.

yah know the install of windows old we talking 15+ years the motherboard isnt even uefi, the mother bard still has ide cable ports. We talking athlon 64 x2 old here, I just need to clone it to ssd and if clones and and i can boot off it that I need, at that point I can see if win 10 upgrades from win 7 are still a thing ( which I hope) i dont want to have dig around of dvd win 7, let alone do clean install of seeing it is EOL win10 much safer especial if upgrades still work and get activated

ah, alright. should be a straightfoward clone then, just make sure the disk is set to active afterwards so its bootable, some software don't do that.

hmm I didnt think about that, I will make sure it is set to that when it done, then I will disconnect the 500gb and connect just the ssd, there is only 1 power line for the sata with this old psu.

Side not I hope cloning this threw HDD/SSD dock connected as usb isnt gona cause an issue, it had to be done this way cause the psu only had 1 sata power connector, which is also why the dvd drive which is sata power isnt connect.

well it worked the file allocation is all screw up according to AS SSD seeing it says (bad) for that and I need to switch the bios to ACHI mode for SSD to use correct controller but it boots off the SSD now. Tomorrow I will see if Windows 10 will actual do upgrade from win 7 to win 10 and active.

And some time in next week or so he will pick up a new psu that has more then 1 sata power connection. which probably not a bad idea seeing the fan on psu sound horrible starting up from cold boot

    Not aligned to 4k?

what software did you use, i know partition wizard and easus have 4k aligning clone methods to optimize for SSD's.

macrium reflect trial I did pick SSD optimize when cloning maybe it it not aligned 4k cause it was clone from 500gb hdd that it shrunk to fit on SSD that had like 223gb after partition, I mean other then it is aligned wrong it working and it is pushin 200 read and 150 write which is about right for stat 2 limited system,

I just gona do clean install of window10 on it IF windows 10 does active using win 7 systems still, and even it dont I will just end up re install a copy of win 7 which i dont want to do both of which should fix the align problem when clean installed. I just did the cloning cause I didnt want to try win 10 upgrade on the 500gb cause there data on there I cant losing which is why it was cloned and the 500gb put to the side.

Farstone offers a free version of their DriveClone software. It works very well. I've been using it for a few years now without any issues whatsoever.

For future reference, every major SSD manufacture will have a software download on their web site to allow cloning of your hard drive to your new SSD.

    Ex. https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/
    https://www.acronis.com/en-us/promotion/CrucialHD-download/
    https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?p=119
    https://www.kingston.com/us/support/technical/acronis-download
    https://www.adata.com/en/ss/software/#

I performed a search for inland professional SSD image and I found no location to download an image program for this product. However I did find this reference to miniTool:

https://www.minitool.com/news/inland-professional-ssd.html You could just use the download URL for the MiniTool Partition Wizard Free below.

In any case, there are a number of free or trial software that can easily clone the OS hard drive to an SSD.

    Some Ex are:
EASEUS Partition Master Free Edition: https://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/EASEUS-Partition-Manager.shtml
    MiniTool Partition Wizard Free: https://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition.shtml
    Macrium Reflect Free Edition: https://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Back-Up-and-Recovery/Macrium-Reflect-Free-Edition.shtml
