    They are very good drivers

I have two systems that have this game on them. One is XP 2400 mhz, 1meg ram, ATI 9800 Pro card. Second is an XP 2600 mhz 512meg ram, FX5900 Nvidia card. The one with the ATI runs the smoothest out of both of them. And the graphics looks better on the first one as well. I will say hands down that ATI cards will have more fun with the game at this time with these new drivers. Now when ever motherboards come out with 2 pci x16 slots then you will be able to play the game at ultra high since 512 video ram is required. I hope soon.

These work well with any OpenGL game. I'm getting as much as 20 FPS more in some of the games I play that are OpenGL.

Why all this? I just installed them like any other driver (pressing next next next) and no problem. What's so special about doing some manual stuff?

I'm with 1024 and medium too... looks great ^^
My previous drivers were 4.2 and now with these 4.9beta frames have gone up prety much, now it runs much better. You can realy tell 5-10 fps wen you're getting 20-25 :D

no point using 800 when 1024 dips only slightly lower. im very impressed with performance especially since nvidia are supposed to be better for open gl. sure as hell runs alot better than Thief or DuesEx2. HL2 should be even better.

Yep, speed difference wasn't very notizable and since my monitor is a TFT, it looks ugly wen you have any other lower resolution than it's max resolution (CRT don't have that problem). I prefered to sacrifice a few frames per second to have realy great grafix :D
Let's see what HL2 has to say about this :p

I think so, but I heard that some guy had his 9500->9700 and a bit overclocked with 4.9beta... and it burned up wen playing doom3. So I'd be careful. Wait 'till we all know what's happening with these drivers and then alter them, just in case.

I know this is a bit OT but how the hell did you manage to get over 13000 points in 3dmark 2k1se with your specs. I'm only getting ~ 10000.

Hello :) i haven't tried 4.8B so i cannot say but it seems that ATi relaesed their somewhat new OpenGL drivers in 4.9B since people are noticing improvements in games such as CoD.

Half-Life 2 is going to be D3D this time as opposed to OpenGL.

In addition, Source -- The new HL engine -- Was written with ATI cards specifically in mind, so it should definitely run very smooth and at high FPS with all the eye candy turned up at high resolutions.

People have done a file by file comparison between 4.8b and 4.9b, and they're exactly the same, plus a few inf files that the 4.8's were missing for some people.

This also means that we probably aren't going to see all those improvements we're seeing with the 4.8b/4.9b until the official 4.9's are released. But I'm sure it's going to be good if they need an extra month to release them, especially considering how well they work already.

This might explain why I didn't see any improvment in Doom3 when switching from 4.8b to 4.9b :)

But I swear my ingame play fps is higher, I am reaching the the 60's now.
