I ran the checkdisk utility, but now it keeps repeating it and I'm not able to cancel. I can't get into safemode to disable it from running either because it freezes at sysdisk.crc

    What do?

If it's Vista or Windows 7, get a Rescue Disk. 7 here: http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/ - the Vista ones are here. These present the Windows Installation screen, but only have the repair options, including a command prompt where you can run chkdsk independent of the OS and hard drive. These work better for me than a BartPE based disk like UBCD4Win and running chkdsk from it.

You'll want another disk like UBCD4Win either way because you will need to run SpeedFan to check the SMART data and HDTune to error check the disk surface.
