For all you fellow Canukians, who did you vote for? My family voted Conservative this time around cuz we are tired of liberals and their tax's + scandles etc...they did some good stuff but meh - its time to change 11 years of Liberal power, actually it looks like the Liberals will win again probably a minority!
Liberal all the way, there's no way in hell would i vote PQ ...also were beating the french in there own province. :canada:
well as you can see Liberals Win a Minority Goverment, so Martin will have to team up with Layton to figure out something or another elections will be called within no time. For all you people around the world (and canadians) that don't know anything about Canadian Politics I'll quickly explain in the simplest form possible. Federal Party's Running: Liberals Leader Paul Martin (Prime Minister)- Political Position Center - US equivalent Democrats Conservative Leader Stephen Harper (Official Opposition) - Political Postion Right Wing - US equivalent Republicans Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe - Political Position Sepratists (meaning they want to break Quebec Away from Canada and form their own Country) - US Equivalent N/A New Democrats or NDP Jack Layton (With this Minority Goverment Jack and the NDP now have strings to pull for or against Paul Martins Liberal Goverment) - Political Position Left Wing - US equivalent N/A Green Party Leader Jim Harris - Political Position Environmentalists Independents - People who run on their own US equivalent Ralph Nader? (correct me if I'm wrong) Results of the Elections as of this post- Liberals - 136 Seats <-- Minority Goverment Conservatives - 95 Bloc Quebecois - 54 (note, they only won seats in Quebec, they had no one running anywhere else) New Democrats - 22 Independents - 1 The Canadian Political System uses a Legislature which has 308 seats. In order for a majority goverment a party must have 155 members of parliament occupying those seats which didn't happen today. Note The Former Liberal Leader- Jean Chretien was able to win 3 majority goverments and his last victory he pulled in 172-177 seats for one of the biggest victories in Canadian history. One Term is 4 years though an elections can be called anytime. Well thats Canadian Politics in a Nutshell - I may have missed some info, but that covers the very basics.
you might want to update that, Liberal=135 Conservatives=99 NDP=19 Anyway a Liberal/NDP alliance vs evyerone else will make a 154-154 deadlock BTW, I didnt vote cuz I moved to a new address 2 weeks ago and didnt have any documents/id on me that stated I was @ my new address....GAY
thanks for the heads up on the parties. i live 15 min away from canada, and i haven't the slightest clue what's going on up there. the only canadian figurehead i think i've ever even hear about is chretien* sp? ....ignorant americans....
While minority govs dont tend to last that long (Joe Clark), it seems that Lib+NDP is the only way that it will work (Lester Pearson)
I voted Conservative....but what do you expect from a Calgarian? Every Riding in Calgary is Conservative, with 26 of 28 seats in the Province of Alberta being Conservative as well. I give the Liberal Minority 6 months before a vote of non-confidence.
I voted for the green party. I normaly like Liberals, but they've screwed up one too may times for my liking, and Consvartives have no really stable platform. At least this way if Canada goes down the drain my hands will be clean.
That's the flaw with Rep by Pop....kinda like who the anti-confederation Bloc Quebecois can gain 55 seats. Proportional Rep doesn't work much better either though, but it still galls me that a Party dedicated to everything Canada is can gain that many seats as a FEDERAL party, while only ever presenting a provincial interest. Man, I was so upset back in the day the BQ were the official opposition....that was just plain stupid, cause they aren't representing the rest of Canada.
that is very true, the bloc - well I donno what they should do with them. The problem, the Feds feed the Quebec goverment more money than any other province in Canada. Ontario is pretty shelf sufficient for obviouse reasons. Quebec just chugs federal money non-stop in order not to leave canada. I Wonder what they will do if they do seperate...51st State Anyone? Then they'll screw the americans into making French one of the official languages then every signpost in america will have to have french, then the americans will kick them out lol....thats the end of my rant
