my buddy had an external hard drive hooked up to his windows desktop / took it out and plugged it into his mac / mac attempted to back up the data so he stopped it / when he put the external back to his windows it says its a raw disk and to format it / im trying to fix it so he can get it back to working on his windows desktop.

i dnt know what to do,can i format the external and recover the data after its formatted?

if so what is the best program to use? thanks

Yes no problem as long as you DO NOT write anything else to the disk.

If Recuva doesn't work you could try GetDataBack.

That's the problem right there. Reinstalling windows/surfing the net etc will have caused a bunch of the data he could have recovered to be lost. Luck of the draw on what you get back.

Bleh. Ignore the above, didn't read the OP properly.

First, connect the damaged hdd by sata cables to a motherboard and a spare disk where you dump your data to.
Set in bios hdd ide pio mode,it will give more sectors/ data back with any recovery software.
Run a live linux cd,linux mint or whatever you want ,install Testdisk ,run it.
Select the damaged disk and point to the spare disk to dump our data on.
