I lost my windows xp installation disc and wondered if there was a place to download it from and just burn a new copy. I don't feel like giving my local pc store $10 just to burn me a new one.

You can download a Windows-copy just about anywhere. Usenet, Torrent etc. I don't know if using your official key (if you haven't lost that) makes it legal or not.

If you are concerned with legalities...downloading a copy of Windows is illegal. With or without a legit key. So is having a computer store burn you a copy.

Pappi, if ya like these forums, you really shouldn't ask here. Not worth a ban asking that question! ;)

Oh sorry, I didn't think it was illegal since I bought one from a store and got a receipt with it(10.00 + tax). They never made it seem like anything sinister when they sold it to me(of course they wouldn't). So what is the legal way? having microsoft send me a copy?

Lost you Windows install disc? I am afraid that you have to buy Windows Xp again or of course Windows Vista; Or contact Microsoft and tell you have lost the disc and maybe you will get a replacement from Microsoft goodwill (this may sound weird?!?).

You just can not download a software like an OS because you have the key/serialnumber. Not to mention that each MS Windows "product" got a unique serial key.

Software are protected by International laws/conventions:
    http://www.softwareprotection.com/

What you may do is to make a back-up of your current windows installation with Norton Ghost or similar software (as fair use).

    Good luck!

It wasn't an installation disc with a key. It was just a copy of the install disc. The guy at the desk told me if I already had an activation code I'm fine. He didn't seem sketchy at all about it. Was just "ordinary business".

Infested Nexus you kill me with the links lol nice! :)

Microsoft doesn't care if you have your original media or not as long as you are using a valid serial number and activation key that have been paid for legally.
In the future when everybody will be on 100Mbit Internet connections, they will probably not even provide installation discs anymore, and will demand you install the whole thing over the net since that will be more secure.

    wrong.
you don't own windows, you own a windows license.

if you have a license, you can get the windows data any way you like. doesn't have to be on a cd.

the license may tell you that you can't make more copies of it, but downloading it isn't making more copies. it's aquiring the (1) copy that you're entitled to.

Actually, if you have a license, microsoft is obligated to replace your cd.
You just have to call them and pay a small fee for the shipping and their trouble.

Well if you bought your computer say from like a computer manufacturer, ex: HP, Dell, then you can obtain a copy of Windows XP for free or for a small fee.

You can use any disk, even if it's supposed to be for a dell or something.

You can also just call microsoft. We lost the CD key for my mom's PC, and microsoft game me a new one over the phone for free. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they game you a new copy.

I thought they just activate it over the phone not give you a whole new product key.
