Ever notice how Americans say Can and Cant the same? Cant is pronounced the same as Can with a silent 'T'.

This can get confusing when watching US TV shows such as Raymond.

The UK and Aussies say Can like they say Man, and Cant like they say Aunt

What happened to the word "Cannot"?

'Cannot' only takes one more syllable, and the 'T' merges with most successive words such as ones starting D and T. I see no problem using 'Cannot'

Seriously, I think people think it sounds to formal for everyday conversation.
In fomal writing I never use "can't."

Americans pronounce a lot of things differently. In the UK there are dozens of different sounding dialects with different slang, to the extent that I can barely understand some of them even though it's the same language.

Can't is just a contraction of can not/cannot. The use of 'can not' is not all that common, I suppose its useful when emphasized i.e. you can NOT do that.

Well, in Canada, we don't get anal about spelling or pronounciation. We accept both US and Queen's english just as long as we can understand what the hell you are saying. *LOL*

Cant was originally slang but it developed into a replacement for cannot.

Ive generally heard cannot being used to emphasize something. Probably 'cause its a bigger word?

    Same...

When I say "can't", I include the T so it's not the same as "can."

Who says them the same? LOL

I can't think of any reason to change the way I say can't. Can you?

yeah, can and can't sound different to me as well. Myabe its confusing for some people because lots of people prounounce "can't" with out ununciating the "t" at the end. They say it, but more with their throat i guess rather than pronouncing the hard "T."
Just a more lazy way to prounounce it.

with "can" most people pronounce the N at the end, not so with "can't." that's how it seems around here anyways..

Are you sure? I've never noticed in any shows either, maybe your TV is setup wrong, or you need maybe hearing aid or something?

And yes, providing we can understand what's being said, I don't think many Aussies care either.

Although when we are talking about Thongs ;) On your FEET btw.
