Can an onboard Realtek ALC889 do simulated surround?

Im trying to avoid buying a sound card and Im wondering if a Realtek onboard audio can do simulated surround sound when I plug in my headphones?

My old card a xfi extreme audio had the option under the console launcher to select the headphone setting and I could hear a helicopter buzz around my head.
Just curious if the onboard audio will be able to do it.

 

Only if you use X-FI MIB2 software and if your realtek codec is compatibility with it.

 

You can if you have THX trustudio or use software that has the capability to do that per-application level:

Take a look at the option that J-River Media Jukebox will give you. This is the far superior to Creative's CMSS.
