Hi all, I have a system with the specs as shown in my profile. I'm planning on buying a Radeon HD 4770 as an upgrade for the GPU. My 8400GS has been working fine and I don't really want to scrap it. 1.Can I use it with the AMD 4770 card in combination, as a Physx only card? 2.Is there anyway I can configure my 8400GS to handle only Physx and the Radeon card for the graphics? I game at 1280 x 1024 resolution.
8400GS will actually likely be slower than a decent processor. Certainly slower than the 4770 could go.
I think the OP just wants to use his GeForce 8400GS as a PhysX card and his ATi Radeon HD 4770 as the graphics rendering card. I too am not sure if that's doable. deltatux
And not worth it on either. It would be basically unplayable. Even 8500s are too slow. 8600GT is the bare minimum really.
I'm surprised that it won't work on Vista if it works on Windows 7 as Windows 7 is basically a minor update to Windows Vista (in terms of the kernel, not UI). deltatux
its somthing to do with a diforent dos emulation carnt remember what but vista wont lett 2 drivers instal in other words it was to smart for itself
WDDM1.0 (Vista) only allows for 1 display driver to be installed at any time. WDDM1.1 (Win7) and WDM (XP) allow for multiple display drivers. WDDM = Windows Display Driver Model WDM = Windows Driver Model
So the only thing I can do with my 8400 GS is just scrap it I have been playing games like Crysis, FarCry, FEAR,etc with medium settings and those like FIFA 09 at high settings with the card. Is there no way I can use it for any purpose in the system. I'm using Windows XP and if required I would upgrade to Windows 7 only and not Vista.
pick one or the other. ati and nvidia drivers on the same system could just become your biggest nightmare.
lol i am trying to do the exact same thing right now. i cant get it to work .. did you have any luck? as of right now every time i install the second gpu the physx dissables itself and in the control panel the option for geforce physx is greyed out. i agree that the 8400GS is far too slow, my 940 @ 3500MHz scores 19 fps on the vantage physics test and the 8400 gets 25. mind you the cpu only @19 looks far faster and far smoother than the physx 8400 @ 25 ... if you had better luck let me know please and i will pick up a 9600GT for testing. the one positive note is that the cpu useage with physx enabled drops to 10%~ whereas normally would be at least 90%. this could make games run faster. or not lol ..
Save your video card for an extra system. I always have old computer parts, downgrades ect. I build computers out of the spares and donate them for tax write offs. When i get new stuff, old stuff gets handed down to my daughter, then her old stuff gets donated or given to family members. an 8400 isn't a hardcore card, but if it can play crysis at any setting, it's worth keeping for other computer projects. Also i keep a secondary computer, dedicated to downloading and network storage for my home network. I also run SVN on it so i can grab files off my computer from work ect. I would also dual box with it when i used to play MMO's. It still uses an FX 5700 LE 128mb video card and an athlon xp-m 2400 OC 2.2ghz. How's that for weak.
