    Hey all

I will be upgrading my graphics card soon to probably a gtx560ti or gtx570 and will be putting my gtx275 in my 2nd rig. It's got an E8400 at 3.6GHz in it and a decent 400w corsair psu with a 30A 12v rail (360w). I know the gtx275 says it needs a 36a 12v rail but since i am running a relatively low power dual core and the psu is a decent brand (parts in it made by Seasonic i think) should it be fine?

    Thanks in advance.

It should work fine, but I would go for a 450-500w to be on the safe side. Also to future proof your self as if you wanted to upgrade in a year or two you wouldn't have to buy another PSU. This is why I went for a 900w PSU, its not overkill like 1kw+ PSU's but it should allow me to keep my GPU/CPU up to current tech without the need to upgrade it every other time I want to upgrade. Best piece of advice when building any PC, never skimp on the PSU or Motherboard as these are the most important parts.

I can agree with all of that, it's just i already have the psu and have for about a year or so, don't want to upgrade it if i don't have to yet. I would like it to last till my next big upgrade if it can (when i put my 1055t in there in maybe 1.5 years). :p

I ran an OC'd Q6600, a GTX 260, and 3 hard drives for 2 years on a CX400 until I found a sweet Black Friday deal on a higher-rated PSU. It's definitely possible to run that setup at full power using the Corsair power supply.

go find the TDP of your components and do the math --- add some for the overclocking and factor in your PSU efficiency and capacitor aging. You should come up with a rough figure for your peak power draw.

I doubt it would. The CX400 was built for office machines, not gaming rigs.

According to the Nvidia website and as you see in the specifications, GTX275 needs at least 550Watt power supply with two 6pin connectors and you should change your power supply if you want to use a GTX275 in that machine.

they protect themselves, considering that 70% people has crappy PSUs.

imo it would work, but dont overclock.

If peak loads are just gaming not furmark or the like and you haven't increased the Vcore to get the 3.6ghz then loads will be somewhere around 275W I guesstimate...that's about a 70% load and I think 75-80% is acceptable without too much stress on a PSU.

Thanks all for the input. I will give it a go in a week or so when i get my new card and watch the voltage with my multimeter on the +12v rail in something like crysis, i guess if it doesn't dip much i will keep using it! The computer only gets used for gaming once or twice a month anyway. :p

I have weird 375W PSU powering up my overclocked cpu, overclocked 4850, and 4 HDDs...
