To be perfectly honest, I really like Bulldozer's novel design, unfortunately, with its current iteration it fell flat on its face. deltatux
I like big yellow tracked machines to, but I can't afford one ... Oh the CPU? Silly name! It couldn't doze a calf. I can't afford an intel either, but once I have Win7 my PhenomII 965 will still be rockin' along. Hmmm... Win7 or GTX580? Wonder which will come first! Skyrim and BF3 for Christmas. Maybe I'll need both to make 'em run.
Ouch, let us add how Sandy-Bridge E manages to be 6 cores, consume less power, not heat up as much, and is 3x as fast in multi-threaded benchmarks as Bulldozer. Poor AMD...you don't get a break, do you?
I don't need to upgrade wright now as my X6 just rule everything I throw on him, but in 2 more years I'll see how the score Intel/AMD is and upgrade accordingly. That means I give AMD another 2 years to get their **** together. I can't stand Intel because of the antitrust issues :biggun: uke2: here in Germany and upgrading to Intel will be a last resort...
Don't talk about looking good on paper. It is gaming benchmarks that look good on paper. Nothing else. And saying Bulldozer is in the same league as the 15 2500K is just wrong. My daughter has a i3 2100Mhz and it is as fast as my PII 965 @ 3.84 Mhz and as the benchmarks between the Bulldozer and the 965 that I've read show the 965 ahead of the Bulldozer 50% of the time. So, in effect, the i5 2500K is way ahead of the Bulldozer.
The only thing I think is wrong with bulldozer is the price. Drop the price to 2500k levels, and I'm sure people would pick one up. From a lot of the benchmarks that I've seen, they're pretty close.
I have been very happy with my 8120 so far. Even with the few Steam only games that have problems right now. As soon as the mainboard makers get there bios updates out that will be solved to. I have a i5 2500k rig and I can tell you that my AMD/ATI rig performs every bit as good as the Intel rig. Although after replacing the piece of crap Nvidia 560 with a Sapphire HD6950 I can atleast run the Intel rig without constant video driver crashes. can you please give us some perf you get for example in games or benchmark? edit: same question for you bryonhowley thx
For people who don't use their machines for more than email, flash, netflix, B.S., I would build them an AMD system. AMD mobo's are really nice lately. Besides, to the 'general user', "speed" is 'how long it boots' and 'how quickly their browser responds'. For a light/mid user, it would be a toss up. GPU matters so much more than CPU. Top end users don't even have the software to need as much power as is available on the market today. (That said, I already bought x79 bits. Just to entertain myself by making something nice.) -scheherazade
I can't really compare my daughter's i3 laptop so I'll withdraw that comment but it is about 5 times faster than her old AMD laptop. And the i3 was cheaper. Bryonhowley: I read of many driver issues with ATI cards. Tommy and MKilbride and Bonob: Yeeaaaahhhh ........... But newer drivers might help Bulldozer. Scheherazade : Good point! I have Prime95 and ran it, but I don't understand the output.
i don't think drivers is anything to do with BD perf but i wait for a new stepping, perhaps the trinity APU will have that new stepping of BD core. About performance i'm very happy with my setup as i can run skyrim on high setting, with vsync off i get around 150 fps in close envoronment and about 40 to 80 outside, 40 in big city and 80 in the country. But now i play with vsync cause i get flickering when i'm close to water.
FX8120 owner here and i like it. Runs all the games i play with zero problems. Fortunately games still rely on GPU more than processor and AMD curb stomps Intel just as hard when it comes to graphics.
