Bug in Windows 10 Insiders-build crashes games

My brother has similar problem. For some reason his computer doesn't upgrade to TH2. I just doesn't show up in Windows Update.

I don't understand people whining about it. INSIDER build. The idea is to notice these things quicker with the larger user group ("insiders") so that they can get patched before they hit the main circuit.

 

Tell him to mount the TH2 ISO and upgrade manually, exact same files, just a different upgrade method

I upgraded using USB/ISO on the laptop/tablet, I feel more in control than using WU method

 

vista didn't really have problems created by MS, most where yes by OEMs giving underspeced PCs to consumers but the vast majority of it was by ****ty developers who couldn't adjust to drivers and change in security which lead to many crashes and so many elevated access prompts whenever you did anything in programs.

 

I'm sorry Hilbert, but this isn't newsworthy. The Insiders Program is a PREVIEW program, beta, etc. Not only that, but this was under 'known issues' for this build. Beta testers knew going in.

If MS gets this kind of press, then they won't release proper beta builds for Windows 10, and that would hurt the OS for everyone, as these builds won't get proper testing.

 

I'm there right now: Windows 8.1.

I don't want to install Win10 because it's not as stable, it installs stuff without permission, it's full of spyware... and the laptop I just clean-installed Windows (an AMD Radeon 7600M series) can't really do Dx12 decently anyway (pre-GCN), so... Win8.1 it is for me for now.

A lot has to change in Win10 before I decide to install it on a computer.

Win10 Threshold 1 is not polished at all.
Win10 Threshold 2 ended up being a big no-no (M$ had to even temporarily remove it).
Win10 Threshold 3 will probably still have major problems.

Hope that sooner or later there's a stable version of Win10 were you can disable the spying and the forced updates without having to "hack" your Windows machine.

 

This happened for me using Win10 v1511 x64 + X-Fi Fatality. Had to use the older version of the driver that Creative removed from their website which I had luckily snagged earlier.

Everything runs smoothly here. I personally denounce any problems regarding that particular build RS1-11102. Is it luck perhaps? :stewpid: Who knows...

 

Seems to affect NVIDIA owners rather than AMD

 

Contrary to general belief, nVidia's driver quality is totally sub-par comparing to what AMD offers, at least in the typical single-card and APUs.

Although AMD's driver track-record is not good, the last few years have been quite OK stability-wise. Maybe a few buggy releases, but there have always been working drivers out there.

nVidia's latest drivers have been full of problems again and again, and there's no clear "this driver is stable for almost everyone" kind of driver in years.

That, and the fact that DDU is a must-have when updating nVidia drivers. It doesn't seem as critical with AMD drivers (although for sure it's recommended).

It seems that when things go a bit more unstable (Windows 10), it's more evident which one has worse structural problems than the other.

 

I was AMD for decades, both sides have an equal amount of problems IMO, just different ones

Difference I've noticed is though, AMD takes notice of them when you report them, NVIDIA ignores you even when you post a link directly in their faces, publicly, in a forum

 

Is not the key here being "insider" build..... Like being a beta tester for the company at your own expense. Turn off the garbage and go with proper updates. Unless that is something the "free" upgrade does not allow you to do. I will never accept anything as free when it comes to this kind of nonsense and will always buy my OS's.

Seriously.. It's a fast-ring insiders build for a reason. Anyone who doesn't want to test the latest unstable Windows 10 build should not opt in on the insiders build. It's that easy. You never get forced into this.
Unbelievable that quite some people still do not see that this makes your normal Windows 10 experience better as things are able to be tested by thousands and thousands of people - all with different computer configurations (something impossible for Microsoft to test on their own) - who are willing to test it..

Mine wouldn't do it either. I came to the conclusion that it was because of the hard drive partitions not being exactly what Win 10 uses by default. I had upgraded an OEM version of 8.1 to 10 and I wound up with 4 partitions where a clean Win 10 installation only has 2. I had 2 recovery partitions and one was 8GB in size from the OEM manufacturer. I deleted the extra partitions and resized the main partition to occupy the freed space. There were also 2 partitions in front of the main system one and when I couldn't get the TH2 update in ANY way, not even from an ISO, I deleted the extra one and again extended the system partition. I then had a disk that looked like a normal Win 10 installation but the update still would not apply in any way even though build 10240 still ran perfectly. System reset would not run either. Then I read somewhere that you should change the HDD controller from SATA to Native IDE. That didn't work either and when I tried to change it back, the system would not boot and was not repairable in any way I tried.

The point is that I had to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install of the TH2 build. Then I was able to recover all of my files and even some games from a full AOMEI system backup I had done before I changed the HDD controller settings. World of Warcraft, LOTRO, Steam, Origin and GOG games were all recoverable by the old copy and paste method. Witcher3 worked perfectly after GOG Galaxy found the copied game files and linked itself to them. WoW just worked right away, LOTRO just needed a .reg file that is included in the game folder to be run. Steam games needed to be selected and attempted to run to make them be fully recognized and playable. The same with Origin. Some other programs needed to be fully reinstalled and set up.

You may have to do the same things on your system that refuses to update to TH2. It's not that unusual an occurrence. In my case, I think it was the partition adjustments that first the upgrade process and then I did. There may be other causes though.
