Britain pulls out spies as Russia, China crack Snowden files

Britain has pulled out agents from live operations in "hostile countries" after Russia and China cracked top-secret information contained in files leaked by former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, the Sunday Times reported.

Security service MI6, which operates overseas and is tasked with defending British interests, has removed agents from certain countries, the newspaper said, citing unnamed officials at the office of British Prime Minister David Cameron, the Home Office (interior ministry) and security services.

Snowden downloaded more than 1.7 million secret files from security agencies in the United States and Britain in 2013, and leaked details about mass surveillance of phone and internet communications.

I hope Edward Snowden is proud of himself. Have fun watching your back for the rest of your life.

I don't believe any of it, just a ploy to pass more surveillance laws.

This doesn't have any implications for the public, rather it affects the spying agencies in the USA ans UK, and perhaps others. It could have dangerous fallout depending on what the files contained.

There's actually no real source for this "information". The press is just running with it because it gets clicks. You really think British spies would report back that China and Russia have cracked the Snowden files, and that Britain would admit this publicly? Way to mark your agents for death and destroy years of hard work. You don't admit to your enemy you have moles in their intelligence agencies.

Even if its true that they removed some agents from "hostile" countries, that leaves an unknown "why" to the equation. I somehow doubt top MI6 officials are telling "The Sunday Times" such critical national security related information.

And what sort of competent spy agency writes downs or records details of the true identities of spies anyway?

    Total fluff news piece

Lie spread to the public to rally up support for Snowden's arrest when he steps out of Russia. His three year pass expires in 2017. Expect more stories like this to surface over time.

What kind of rhetoric is this anyway - "hostile countries" Russia and China.

Either they are hostile or not. There should not be room for quotation marks
with something as sensible as defining your enemies; not in serious publication anyway.

If it is just a cynical ploy to pass through new anti snooping laws then it is a rather ill timed one. Asking ISP's to keep a log of all texts, emails and phone calls of everyone. I can't see that happening without a fight.

There is cruel logic to this. If you have spies for purpose of knowing about preparation of China/Russia for global conflict and starting it, then you are one who waste your resources.

What will USA do if they realize 1 month before "Fictional China" starts 3rd WW?
Will they attack 1st? So as consequence modern civilization ends 1 month earlier and there is no chance for that "Fictional China" government body to change its mind.

You know what will have real dangerous consequence? Countries around world realizing how much they have been sabotaged over decades. (if that is part of leaked files)

Different way of looking at this is that the US wants his head on a platter so bad because he singlehandedly showed how easy it was to walk off with classified documents, while all this snooping, eve's dropping, and intercepting was in full swing. All that spying was done "for our safety," yet it failed at detecting...what Snowden was doing. How effective were those programs and laws. Sad thing is, if this amounts to real serious fallout, just how effective were those steps? See where this is going? Time for an overhaul, yes?
