Bluescreen at startup after driver install on 7850

I got myself an Sapphire Radeon HD7850. On a fresh Windows 7 with all the latest updates when I install the GPU drivers I get a BSOD (0x000000116, atikmdag.sys) at startup.

I've tried 12.2, 12.3, 12.4b, 8.95.5 which all produce the same problem (Atiman uninstaller and driver sweeper used to uninstall driver) Running on standard windows VGA-drivers I have no problems. I've updated the mainboard BIOS and tried reinstalling Windows.

Anybody know why this happens? Anyone else having this problem?

Thank you :) I've used this forum for a while now, but never needed to post anything untill now.

There is only one PCIX slot. I'm using DVI, but also tried the HDMI. The PSU is built in to the case (Silverstone Sugo SST-SG08B Black Mini-ITX 600W).

8.95.5 and 12.3 WHQL are only 2 drivers for the 7850. Hope that narrows it down for you.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried those. But I still get the BSOD at startup (Windows logo appears for a few seconds, then the screen flashes a few times, then the BSOD saying "Stop 0x000000116"... and ..."atikmdag.sys").

You don't have anything like MSI afterburner installed do you?

    What does event viewer say?

What other peripherals do you have connected?

Have you tried starting it with everything unplugged including mouse/keyboard?

Have you tried disabling everything possible in the bios? e.g on board audio/firewire.....

Nope, not MSI afterburner and no other overclocking tool neither.

In that case i would suggest to do another fresh install and this time install only the latest amd/ati whql drivers 12.3 and do not try any Beta drivers as sometimes the Beta drivers tend to mess the registry.

this 116 BSOD atikmpag.sys is affecting a lot of people, don't rush to assume its a hardware problem , i think its driver related.

I don't think I have the integrated graphics. Can't find any options for it in Bios and Aida64 doesn't show it.

Event log goes something like (translated from Swedish):
    • Error - EventLog - unexpected shutdown
    • Critical - The computer has been shut down improperly...
    • Error - Service control manager: following start och systemdrivers were interrupted during start: AsIO, AsUpIO, aswSnx, aswSP, aswTdi, discache, spldr, Wanarpv6
    • Then services which couldn't be started...

I'm using Logitech wireless keyboard (K340) and mouse (M305).

I tried 12.3 with wlan, lan, audio, usb3 and optical drive disabled + unplugged the logitech recievers. No luck.

its in your 2500k look in your m/b manual. you should have a connector right on that h61 m/b to use the graphics

I tried Googling but mostly saw posts about random 116 atikmpag.sys BSODs. Perhaps it's driver related, but it still leaves me with a GPU I can't use properly. I'll contact the vendor tomorrow to have their opinion.

do you have a vga connector on the back of the m/b? you plug it in there you are using the inegrated graphics on your 2500k. I am not certain thats the problem only look into that. I never used the integrated graphics because my p67 chipset does not support that
