Havent updated my Z690 bios in almost a year. Despite several updates having been released since. Just dont want to go through the hassle of having to reconfigure things for minor or compatibility fixes that dont apply to me. In past, used to update all the time. But now just dont give a crap. If everything performing well, and if it aint broke, I leave things be. I do tend to read bios notes, just never find any compelling reason to go through with an update. So what your approach to bios updates nowadays?
I try to avoid them if I can as they've always made me kind of nervous lol. However the board I'm on now has had I believe 7 or 8 bios updates since I got it and all have went flawlessly. I'm definitely getting my money's worth out of it.
I always update to the latest bios on AMD platform. Even now i have the latest agesa for AM5. It always include latest features, improved compatibilty and stability.
Mixed bag. On production machines, only if it is critical and even then, the most safe route is taken. Personal, well...I have some bad experiences that made me more knowledgeable in that area... by force.
I write the settings down on a piece of paper and keep it in the motherboard box to remember everything I did. I'm not sure if it's the same for every motherboard manufacturer, with Asus the flashback feature is very handy... really like having the ability to flash the bios with the pc off, and being able to go backwards to a previous bios if a newer one has issues, which I've had to do a couple time.
I update bios when the changelog offers something I can utilize, like performance improvements. If it has stability improvements and my system runs great, I don't see a reason to update. On AMD, I'd go for the update whenever there is one available due to the issues in the past and what Undying said. I recently updated my bios when I decided to go Windows 11 so while I was doing a clean install I figured updating bios and ME firmware couldn't hurt. Just note down your settings (that differ from optimized defaults), backup your data. OneDrive is a blessing for this.
BIOS of my ASUS motherboard offers to save settings into file on USB drive and to load from file from USB drive. Very comfortable feature.
Mine too. BUT that said, the issue could be changes between BIOS versions that might not be compatible (had that but they gave a heads up in the BIOS' description), or simply buggy! I took the liberty to screenshot my custom settings in BIOS onto an USB drive, another neat feature.
Pretty sure I would have a different approach to bios updates if had an AMD system. I also take screenshots of all settings, but it's a lot more than before, esp when fine tuning DDR 5.
I would definitely recommend staying up to date on bios and firmware updates for security alone. And that is especially true with intel who always forgets to lock the damn doors
On my past Intel builds, i would play it safe and i would only update the BIOS from time to time or if it was really necessary, just like you. Since i`ve moved to AMD and to AM5, i`ve started updating the BIOS regurlaly because the platform is still fresh and that was noticeable because the updates really improved my system. And today i did another update to the latest BIOS provided by ASUS.
Years ago, I never updated my BIOS. Now, because of Meltdown/Spectre attacks coming out all the time, you kind of have to make sure you're running the latest CPU microcode.
