I guess I won't install 2000 because it's a bit old but I want 2003 instead. Which version is faster? Standard or Enterprise?

    hi guys...
i went form win xp sp2 to win 2000 sp4 and i tell you it is great...
the preformance difference is surprisingly high...
at boot xp took 486 meg of ram
and xp only tkaes 82 meg leaving heaps for my apps ect....

i think everyone shoul try win 2k if they are experiencing slugishness.....

the preformance of FEAR rocketed up when i installed 2k and it runs a lot smoother than before....

I tried to reproduce OldGuy932's results on my machine with 77.72 but...

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Release to Manufacturer Final
    3DMark03: 1972

Windows Server 2003 Standard Service Pack 1 Corporate/VLK
    3DMark03: 1956

I'll have to format an entire 250GB partition to install 2000 here... If I get about the same results as XP, I'll be really disappointed :(

would you have to format everything in order to install a new service pack?
    ie: service pack 4

No, Service Pack 4 should install without you needing to format.

I have been using Windows 2000 for years now, and it is much nicer than XP, I tried XP a few weeks ago, and I really see NO benefit in XP over 2000 at all, I recommend you install 2000 if you are a gaming enthusiast, as you will get much better speeds with Win2k. ;)

XP ended up as the overall winner for my hardware. Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 with all updates just couldn't beat it in any aspects even 3D gaming. I guess this still might be a good idea for people with very old hardware (GeForce 4 and below).

Just Windows XP Service Pack 2 Corporate/VLK Release to Manufacturer installed now.

That's a bit odd, because a few people here have higher spec machines than you and they use Windows 2000 Pro.

Did you ever benchmark it on Windows 2000, that would be nice to see, bench XP and 2000 and then you'll see which is faster? ;)

Sure thing :( Benchmarked 2000 after all updates. Lost points in all benchies.

Hmm, now that is weird, I just run Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4, no other updates, and it runs great. :)

Well... If I had a better agp card than the ti4200, I would've tested it. And about the speed difference between 2003 Enterprise and Server, I honestly dont know cause I never installed my copy of Enterprise. Now if someone could compare to Windows 98 SE that would be good too. When I build my next computer in 2 years I'll do the test again, hopefully with a copy of vista also. I didn't like the beta much though.

Edit: Well maybe I can redo those tests soon. The fan just died on the ti4200, and I realy don't feel like just replacing the fan/heatsink when I could just get a new card that would be good with the system instead of bottlenecking, as the ti4200 does bottleneck the system quite a bit.

I wonder Win Vista will be more better than previous OS for playing games especially using less ram to run it smooth.

Hmm, I'd say at the moment Windows 2000 is the best for speed and security.

I did everything possible for my desktop hardware and 2000. No good.

I'll format my girlfriend's laptop and install 2000 SP4 again (installed once) to benchmark it more. It's a Toshiba Qosmio F25-AV205 (Centrino 1.8, 2MB L2Cache, 1GB DDR2 RAM, GeForce Go 6600). Anyone tried something like that and got good results?

If it goes wrong, I can just use Toshiba Recovery DVD (Norton Ghost) to put Media Center 2005 back in there :)

I'll do a quick check of the stuff on my p4 system:

    3.4ghz P4 Prescott
    2gb DDr2 533
    925 chipset
    6800gt 256mb pci-express
    190gb sata

The check won't have the difference for the x64 editions. That was the only plus of testing on the other system.

    2gb ddr2-533 ram
    6800gt 256mb pci-e
    Forceware 81.95
    Intel 925XECV2 motherboard
No updates done on any OS except the service packs

    Windows 2003 Server Standard Sp1
    Aquamark 3 - 62,972
    3DMark03 - 11,780
    3DMark05 - 4,985

    Windows XP Professional Sp2
    Aquamark 3 - 63,187
    3DMark03 - 11,790
    3DMark05 - 5,006

    Windows 2000 Professional Sp4
    Aquamark 3 - 52,273
    3DMark03 - 10925
    3DMark05 - 4855

Looks like XP is the winner, but I'll do a second runthrough of everything just to check.

Edit: Screw doing a second runthrough, installing windows 2000 screwed up the dual boot again.

Hmm, seems a bit odd to me, I've seen other tests where Windows 2000 has won by a considerable margin, on a similar spec machine.

Maybe it just depends on the hardware you have. :p

Were you using Windows 2000 with ALL the correct drivers installed, and the same drivers as on XP and 2003?

Also, it seems to me like the performance went down a lot with the 81.95 drivers, which is a shame.

I used the 81.95 WinXP/2000 driver on all 3 OS's. I used the Chipset driver that came on the cd with the computer. I didn't install anything else. Only wish that Nvidia actually said something on their site that the WinXP/2000 driver is also the driver for 2003. Only thing I was kind've happy about with the test was that my Aquamark3 score jumped about 6k at stock settings. Just goes to show how much crap gets put on computers bought from companies. Hopefully Nvidia comes out with a better driver for the vista beta soon, might be good to see what vista can really do. I can do another test today with different sets of drivers if you want. Personally though, I liked Windows 3.11 the best :D .
